I am currently looking for a good/nice shotgun to purchase. I live in California and I already know the california gun laws are strict as it already is. I am trying to look for a tactical shotgun (not a hunting), OR a shotgun that is good for self defense. I was really interested in buying a benelli m4 but that is military issue and I doubt that california citizens will not be able to purchase them. I was also thinking about the mossberg or the remington 870. Can anybody suggest on what other good shotguns there are to buy in the state of california that are tactical w/ a price range of 500 or under. Thank you.

You sound like you already know what you want. You can't go wrong with either a Mossberg 500 or the Remington 870. They both can be made tactical, will work excellent for self defense, and since they also are prefered by hunters; they can be considered a "sporting" firearm which will help insure they don't get banned as a gun without any lawful purpose. Either will easily fit in your less than $500 budget and leave money to spare for ammo and accessories.
There are others that will fall in the price range, but the Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 will be high quality for this range. It would be tough to do any better than these two on that budget.

If you can find a Beretta 1201FP it should run about $500. It's a copy of the Benelli Inertia-Driven action, and very reliable. It's a 20" cylinder-bore tactical police semi-auto shotgun, and it's a great deal for the money. Otherwise, if you can't get that, you might want to look for a Mossberg 500 with the 18" barrel. Those are very dependable shotguns. More so than an 870 is for less than an 870 Express.

If you can find a Mossberg M-590, that would be the best option. For several years, it was the official shotgun for the US Armed Forces.

Another great option would be the Mossberg M-500. Get an 18.5" barrel and you are ready to go. You can even get one with a Marinecote finish that is pretty resistant to saltwater spray, but it is real shiny.

If you are betting your life on the shotgun go with the Rem. 870. Or a double barrled Coach Gun in 10 Ga or 12 ga.
