In this case I would recommend the Glock. It is an all around better weapon than the Smith. However, the important thing is how it feels and shoots in your hands. If the Smith is more comfortable for you, than its the better choice. The M&P is certainly no junker, with proper care it will last a long time.
I would also suggest looking into the XD40, it is more comfortable than the Glock in my opinion, and is just as reliable.

Glocks are more dependable over S&W. In fact my first auto was a Sigma and from what I understand the M&P is just a fancy Sigma. I had an issue with every 3rd round jamming up. I will also suggest the Springfield Armory XD Series. Just as dependable as Glocks but better looking and added safety. The XD has a grip safety that prevents the gun for discharge unless the safety is depressed. It is very simular to the beaver tail on a 1911. There is also a load indicator on top of the slide to show you have a round in the chamber and a striker idicator telling you the gun is ready to fire. The trigger systems are identical to each other. I also like how the XD fits in my hand compared to the Glocks as well as how it feels while aiming. It is a natural pointer. Very comfortable to shoot over long periods of time with dead on accuacy. The XD has better sights in my opinion and they are a little heavier so recoil is slightly less. Take a look, you may like them.
Otherwise go with the Glock.

The S&W M&P is catching some popularity fast. It should be just as dependable as the Glock, if not more(probably more, if you get halfway decent ammo). The S&W has better rails for the slide to ride on, so I'd go with that. Also, the M&P is available with a safety, and is drop safe, unlike the Glock. The trigger pull on the M&P is about 6lbs, but shorter and crisper than a Glock. It's a REAL double action, unlike a Glock. If you think a Glock is really double action, have someone dry fire theirs. Then, without touching the slide, have them dry fire it again. DA pistols generally are better for carry and defense, as you can carry with the hammer down, or pull again to try to re-strike a tough primer. Hammer-down carry is irrelevant in either of these, though, since they're both striker fired.
In my honest opinion, the M&P is afar better choice for a carry gun, and the compact would be nearly perfect for concealment.

I'd go with the M&P if you don't mind the conventional barrel set-up and a few miore parts to deal with. Personally I am considering a full-size M&P some day. I had a Glock and did not like the trigger, but I used to own a Sigma and the trigger was one of the only good things about it.

I definitely agree with George. If you can try both before buying, that would be ideal. Whatever feels the most comfortable in your hands is what will matter.
Try to shoot at least 100 rounds through each pistol so you know how it feels. It sounds like a lot of rounds, but you'll find that the more rounds you put through it, the more in tune you become with it.
The more comfortable you feel with it, the better you'll be able to compare the two.
Like others said, both pistols are concealable with the right rigs.
But the best solution: When in doubt, BUY BOTH! =)

Glocks can be serviced by the consumer easily because of their design, like the 1911A1's, Glocks have gone through torture tests which have destroyed other guns, and it still came back shooting flawlessly. Can the same be said for the S&W's? I think NOT.

I think the glock is a great weapon, but like you I like the feel of the slimmer M&P. I believe, because I'm uncomfortable with the feel of the glock, that I tend to heel it when firing.

My buddy just traded his glock for the M&P. I'm really not in love with either one but if I had to decide I would go with the M&P.
