The US Armed Forces, which is America's Defense Forces, spend most of their time during peacetime at training to become more proficient and working at keeping military equipment and weapons in shape for instant use, in the event of hostilities.

In addition, many members are at schools learning to become expert in their assigned duties and grades.

A number are also on leave, playing sports, raising families, and generally "doing their things".

Military Service is a great life, if one is so inclined, and it develops a super camaraderie with the other members of the Services. You will make friends who will lay down their lives for you, where else does that happen in civil life?

Hope I don't sound like a recruiter. It's just that I spent 21 years of my life in the Army, all over the world and through three wars and I made some life-long friends in the Service.

Never a really "peace" time. U.S. is always in some country just waiting for something to happen. But pretty much when no conflict is going on the millitary is training and slightly preparing for the worst. Making sure that our hot zone troops are at a high combat readiness. Rotating the troops out. Its still pretty busy even in "peace" time.

Train, go on deployments, train with foreign services, engage in humanitarian actions. The U.S. Marine Corps has been called up to engage in some sort of action roughly twice a year since its inception in 1775

Train for War!

Drills. Learns how to operate new equipment. Maintains its readiness to perform its mission as an instrument of foreign policy as dictated by congress through their Command and Chief.

The military also reacts in emergencies (floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, fires) when we're too dumb to take care of ourselves, or figure out how to get ourselves into more trouble than the usual authorities can handle

Train and prepare for when we are needed. You don't become the best military in the world just sitting around.
