If you are doing your own room and it isnt too big, you can buy a spray on texture from a can. It is available at any home improvement store and pretty easy to use. If you want to take on a little more of a challenge, if you arent experienced at it, then you can get your self a 5 gal bucket of joint compound (mud) and a 12 inch drywall knife. Spread an even coat over the entire ceiling. While it is still wet you can use several different items to make different patterns. A broom to do a streaked fan pattern, a sponge to blotchy effect or a drywall kinfe to do a smooth pattern. Let dry and paint.

For resale purposes you may want to rethink a texture on your ceiling or elsewhere. Everyone is removing them these days as they are not popular and difficult to keep clean. Smooth is best and easier too.

Ask for some ideas on this at your local hardware store. There are many styles and techniques to choose from.
