When I walk into the rat room many of the rats leap to the cage bars, beady black eyes fixed on me as they beg for attention......................... then there are those who could care less if I'm around.
When I let them out of the cage, some come to greet me first and then they race off to play, others run off to play and check me out later, and still others check me out off and on throughout their play time.

I think its all about knowing how rats work, they show their excitement in so many ways.....but its different than a dog or cat would. My Roxy runs laps around her wheel and food dish whenever I come into the room and the new little rat I just adopted plays a "chase" game with my hand and then I give her a chance to come out and she does! There as different (rat to rat) as we are person to person....Good Luck figuring out your little rattie!

I've had my rats for a few months. I also talk to them when I walk in the room, and then open the door and let them come to me. If you just open it and reach in they'll be scared. So let them choose. Some rats may not have that personality and don't show excitement, but if they come to you they are obviously happy to see you.

Oh yes, the one rat I had, Big Daddy, he is now over in "Rainbow Bridge", used to actually wag his tail when I picked him up. It was the most awesome thing I have ever seen. I used to get so much affection out of him, kisses all the time and I used to play with him for hours on end. He was awesome. People who know rats are special people.

your rats still might be a little intimidated by you. my rat, Xavier, never seems to show excitement when I come. At least they don't run away. It all depends on how long you've had your rats. Maybe they need time to adjust.

Our guys are usually excited to see me unless it's nap-time. The girls hop right out of the cage & scamper up my arm, especially our little dumbo. The boys are more mellow & I usually have to haul them out of the cage, but they definately seem happy when I walk up to them & are very snuggly once they're out.
Even when we had a room with free-range rat girls, they would run up & greet me. One black berkshire in particular would leap onto my shoulder the moment I was close enough. Whenever I'd sit in that room, they'd eventually make their way to where I was sitting. Sweet.

I talk to my rats first, through the cage. I get their attention. Then I open the cage door, and let them come out to me. They actually get to choose (majority of the time) whether they want to come out or stay in their cage.

I had one rat in particular that was really attached to me, and when I'd approach his cage he's go running back and forth and sniffing at the hood to get to me. Soon as I opened it he'd climb out and get on my shoulder, and he'd walk around with me a while. Sometimes he even went with me to the Petstore to visit the girl that sold him to me, and she would carry him all around the store showing him off. He was the best out of the 4 rats I've had. (I carried him to the store in a cloth tote bag with bedding in it; when we got into the store he'd poke his head out and get ready to visit...lol)
