I'd ask someone who's been to one of the cocktail parties, at the CEO's house... barring that.... sports jacket & tie... and a simple black dress or dress pants and conservative top, for your wife... perhaps even ask the CEO's executive assistant.

Try calling over to his house and ask what you can bring, foodwise. Then casually ask "what is the dress code?"
If you don't feel comfortable doing that, wear khakis or black pants, that way you are sure to be within the normal ranges of dress no matter what others are wearing. Anything but jeans!

If it was more than just a casual evening, it would have been so noted. Sounds like khakis and a nice shirt for you and either a nice pants outfit for your wife or a day dress. Of course, you could also ask your boss just to be sure.

you can never overdress. wear a sports jacket and tie. if it's casual you can remove the tie. if it's really casual you can remove the jacket. don't underdress. you can't fix that. i'm not sure what your wife should wear but you get the idea.
