My son and his g/f and me, too...we step all over the place, people spit, my son's g/f works in a nursing home, my son works with folks all over the world, I do home health care...my shoes and theirs and have been everywhere...bathrooms, parking lots...that crap on their shoes and mine - why not ask them to take of their shoes before they come in? I don't want that crap in my house...think about where the bottom of your shoes have been...you want that in your house? In your kitchen? Bathroom? Why can't we be like the Japanese, don't wear shoes in the house? Do they have staph? We have a jillion immigrants everywhere...hillbillies, meth folks...they are spitting to show they are men and we step in it when we go to stores or gas stations and then we walk in our house...what is wrong with asking people to take off their shoes before they come into my house? Oh, also...my folks could have stepped in some old man's pee that he left behind at a store...take off your shoes?

Your house, your rules. Make whoever comes in take off their shoes if you want to.
On a side note: "We have a jillion immigrants everywhere...hillbillies, meth folks...they are spitting to show they are men and we step in it when we go to stores or gas stations and then we walk in our house."
You have an attitude towards immigrants that I can´t even describe with words, otherwise my answer to an "Etiquette" question would violate any sort of etiquette I can currently think of.

I don't think there is anything wrong with asking people to take off their shoes before they come into your home. I've even gone to homes where they keep a small basket of hand knit slippers by the front door. When the guests leave they are easily tossed in the washer. Just tell people that you do home health care and some people have compromised immune systems and you have to be careful. You don't want to spread germs around.

We have rules in my house that we bend when company comes over because we want them to be comfortable. Etiquette is about putting others' feelings before yours. Besides, I don't have company every day. When people come over they can wear their shoes or not, sit on my furniture, eat off my good dishes, sleep in my bed. If something gets a little dirty we'll clean it up. No worries, just relax and have a good time.I don't mind mopping the floor if something gets tracked in. That's what cleaning tools were invented for.Just get a clorox ready mop and sanitize it in like 10 seconds.

There is absolutly nothing wrong with you asking the poeple that come into YOUR house to take off there shoes, of course it would be best if you kept some slip on shoes to wear around the house.

There is nothing wrong with asking folk to take their shoes off, you can even frame a sign asking everyone to "please remove your shoes".
Also it might be nice if you offered slippers for some people so their socks don't get dirty or a run in their pantyhose (not that your floors are dirty, but hey)
recently when our house was on the market, the realtors put a sign in the entry way (framed) please remove your shoes.
it is perfectly fine to request this, it is your house!

There's nothing wrong with it and you're right we pick up alot of stuff on our shoes. Why bring it in the house? Most of my friends do it. I wear slippers at my place. It's not a bus station, it's where you live. Don't worry about it.

there is nothing wrong with it. both of my grandmother's (one from scotland the other from ireland) had it as a rule in their households and my mom had a cool sign posted outside of her doors that requested that shoes be removed before entering. i have always done it. (besides the fact that i can't stand wearing shoes to begin with)
i have also noticed that more and more households do do so.

People in many countries do this, no problem. Just provide some "house shoes" for your guests, slippers for example.

There is virtually nothing more gauche than imposing such rules upon guests. It's the height of bad manners: guests are to be honoured and in applying conditions to their entry into your house you're showing yourself up to be not only ungenerous but boorish and petty.

It's rude. How does the person you want to take off their shoes know how clean your floors are???
