I think when you read His teachings, how he advocated forgiveness, love of enemies, loving those who hate you, that Jesus would have said that the use of the death penalty is always wrong.

What do you think Jesus would have said about capital punishment?

For those who might suggest that Jesus would not have been opposed to the death penalty... do you really think he would have endorsed it as an option for the state? Do you think he would have said its a good thing for governments to do? I think that if asked point blank he would have said its wrong.

Deciding to kill someone for their crimes means you must thoroughly judge someone, which is something humans have neither the right nor ability to do.

Clearly, there were many teachings from the Old Testament that were overturned by Jesus.

There is no doubt in my mind that Jesus is appalled by the way we murder our brothers and sisters in the name of the state.

I think you are wrong. I agree with your evaluation of what Jesus said, but you are assuming that what Jesus said was aimed at society as a whole or was aimed at governments. It was not. It was aimed at how individuals should live, not how society should govern. Since Jesus is God your line of reasoning would say that God is inconsistent with himself because he told the Jews to take the Promised Land by slaying all the inhabitants. That amounts to capital punishment. And God told them to do it for a very good reason. He knew that the inhabitants were sinful and unclean and were not worshipping God but themselves and Satan. They would lead the Jews astray, which is exactly what did happen. So he ordered them to kill all. There are times for killing and times for sparing life.

Matthew 4:17
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Jesus said He was the Word of God, therefore this scripture comes from Jesus:

Rom 13:
1: Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2: Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
4: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

Therefore God has ordained the use of the sword for governments.

Jesus was killed by capital punishment.

"Whatever you do to the least of my brothers that you do unto me."

Jesus likely would say it is the law, but you can change the law. What you forgive here on earth is forgiven in heaven.

Jesus supported the law completely. Do you really think that Jesus gave up His character quality of justice when He came to this earth?
Why did Jesus say in Matthew 10:28 "Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." He was speaking of Himself.

Well; the Jews persecuted Jesus because they believed he broke the law set by God, such as blasphemy and working on the sabbath; also the laws set by the Romans. And he freely excepted that punishment by them and did not judge them wrong; since it was law set by his Father.

He said you without sin cast the first stone.Like you I believe in helping those in prison,he said also to visit those in prison, the widows, the fatherless.I believe many who are in prisons are emotionally, mentally, challenged.I would never agree with capital punishment no matter the crime.A person can always be reformed if given the right tools and guidance.Shalom

Of course not Jesus loved capitol punishment. It is the method he chose for himself. Where would the christian martyrs be without capitol punishment?
