Bulldogs were originally bred to bait bulls. They would chomp on to a bulls face and hold on as long as they could. (Yes, it's true, this was considered a sport to many.)
To "aid" bulldogs in this venture they were bred with certain features.
Lots of facial wrinkles - so blood could easily run down their faces while they held fast to the bull.
Big heads/Strong jaws/big chests - keeps the majority of the dogs' weight forward for better leverage when holding on.
Smashed face/short nose - lets the dog breathe while still holding on.
Very high pain tolerance - for obvious reasons.

It is because American Bulldogs have a high pain tolerance. They were bred to work with Large Cattle, if they whimpered every time they got hurt they wouldn't be efficient working dogs. So people bred the most stoic dogs to get the job done. He is in pain, he just doesn't want to show it.

They were bred that way.
Back in the day, bull dogs were fighters. They deliberately bred the ones, like yours, that didn't show (didn't feel?) pain.
That trait has been passed down, and in my opinion, is one of the qualities that makes them great pets for little kids. Kids pull ears and fur, they trip over their dogs, and step on their feet. Bull Dogs just don't notice these "little" hurts, and remain calm and friendly. (usually)
Other breeds are sensitive and more fragile, in pain, they may bite/snap/get upset.

Bully Breeds are known for a high tolerance of pain. That's why they are great for kids because kids can play rough with them and not hurt them. He's just a tough dog

Dogs seldom show pain. It is a throwback to when they lived in the wild. Howling in pain, or showing that they were hurt made them vulnerable to attack. Our modern dogs are simply a product of their own genetic history.

Dogs (and many other animals) are reluctant to show pain because it shows weakness. If it didn't hurt enough that he couldn't control his reaction, he would probably try to hide the pain. Its just instinct.

I am not 100% sure, but i do know that with their skin; it is tougherl because they get their name from being in rodeos and having bulls rip their horns into their skin, but i don't think that that would help here.
