We are looking to adopt a puppy and want to be sure the pup isn't too young to leave its mother and litter mates. Most pet stores begin adopting out at 8wks but breeders seem to adopt at 12wks. Thanks!!

To be clear, we are intend to purchase from a breeder. I referenced pet stores as a comparison. In addition, not all puppies found at pet stores are from puppy mills.

A reputable breeder will NOT let the puppy go until 8 weeks and no earlier than that. Any later than 10 weeks its spent too much time with mom and can be harder to ween. Avoid pet stores as most are puppy mills. There are some pet stores that do help the SPCA and other agencies out with getting dogs/cats adopted BUT make sure you demand to see their paper work saying so. WORD OF MOUTH IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

The law in most states in the US say puppies must be at least 8 weeks old before they can be bought, sold, adopted or given away.

No not all pups sold in pet stores are from mills but all pups sold in pet stores come from irresponsible breders. No responsible, ethical breeder ever sells their pups in a pet store.

Also be aware that vaccinations need to start at 8 weeks (not younger) and should be done at 8, 12 & 16 weeks of age with rabies at 20 weeks or older.
Any puppy you get should have it's first vacciantion and have been dewormed at 2, 4, 6 & 8 weeks of age.

Pet stores aren't adopting dogs out, they are selling them for a profit. There is a HUGE difference. I think eight to 10 weeks is good time for a puppy to leave the litter.

NEVER GO TO A PET STORE. THATS PUPPY MILL CENTRAL.

Puppies can leave their litter at 8 weeks. Breeders allow their puppies to go with their families at 8 weeks

Raising and show dogs for 49 + years I do not take a puppy from it's litter until 10-12 weeks. In the mean time it's a lot of handling, paper trainitng, and crate training to make them GOOD Citizens

It is safe anywhere from 8 wk. to 12 wks. if a small type breed and only then if the pup has been eating on its own for about two weeks.Wouldn't suggest buying from a pet store.

Eight weeks is the earliest recommended, and you really don't want to go more than 12. Eight or nine is a good time for the puppy to leave its litter.

8 weeks is the earliest a pup should leave the litter, 10-12 weeks is better. It allows the pups to learn dog etiquette from their mothers and other siblings (things like biting hurts, how to share toys and food, you can venture out by yourself and it will be ok, etc).

We have 1-3 litters if puppies a year, and we usually let them leave depending on the size, attitude, and health of them. We usually let them leave at 8-11 weeks.
