A rescued 'mongrel' from the shelter. I've always enjoyed them more than any others.

Dogs from the shelters. They need you way more than some posh breeds from snooty breeders only up for getting money out of them. The dogs from the shelters DONT have a home, they need a second chance in life. I'm not saying that dogs from breeders don't need love and attention but dogs in shelters need a home, dogs from breeders already have a home and always will until someone buys them. Think about it, if you were in an orphanage wouldn't you want to be adopted and took to a loving, kind home?

It depends on what type of home you have to offer and what you want from a dog. If you only have a small home/small garden then obviously a smaller breed would suit you. Some people look for dogs that don't moult (ie poodle, Bichon Frise) some need dogs to get along with other animals and/or children. How much exercise can you give the dog? some dogs are happier with less exercise than others. You need to research dog breeds according to your needs and what you can offer.

For what? A small dog is better in an apartment. A friendly breed like mastiff or retriever is better with kids. A large dog is better in a big house with a big yard. A pure bred is better for people who don't like surprises in the way of temperment/behavior. A mutt is better from an altruistic point of view. A bulldog, pitt, or doberman is better for security.
I've had a number of dogs. I like Mastiffs because they are gentle for their size, and they are active. They love to run. I like terriers for their scrappy personality and best when I've lived in small areas. I had a doberman, but he was too aggressive (and no, I was not aggressive with him, it's the breed). I've rescued a few mutts, but you aren't sure what you get there. I rescued a chow mix that was so loving, but his previous owner had beat him. It left him scarred and excitable. He ended up being euthanized after he bit a neighbor who was playing with him.
To choose the best dog for you, you need to list a few things. Size of apartment/home and yard (again, big dogs need big spaces). Your activity level (if you are a couch potato, you need a lazy dog). Your willingness to train (some breeds are just faster learners). The dogs main purpose in your life (is it a gaurd dog or a companion). Age of the dog even (do you want to raise a puppy and have to go through all that that entails, or would you like a grown up dog that already knows who he is and how to behave). And of course, do you plan to breed the dog or will you neuter/spay?

Rescue dogs are not only neutered for you but will have up-to-date vaccinations and, the older ones, may already be trained. Plus, the staff at shelters will help match you one suited to your home and family.
If you must have a pure bred dog, golden retrievers are great family pets. They are big softies who tend to mix well with all members of the family. Do ask to see both the parents (to see if they are in good health) and do a quick check to ensure the pup is well. Also, only buy from a reputable breeder as buying from puppy farms can leave you with a puppy who is ill due to inbreeding.

Defianetly Standard poodles....i know that you are thinking: "ew! i don't want a girly dog princess thing!" Well, don't worry; they are not....they are very good guard dogs, and are very protective. They also have a loud booming bark. They can have a cuddly lap dog side too. We have a litter of them right now for sale: http://webpages.charter.net/cooncreek

A mutt from a shelter or a purebred from a reliable, EXPERIENCED breeder who breeds out genetic problems -- and in the second case, be willing to pay a lot for that reputation and experience.
