I would like opinions on the situation I have found myself in. Yesterday, we found a young beagle pup that had been placed in our front yard. She was attached to a makeshift leash, and had no tags of any kind. She is extremely underfed, I believe she may have intestinal worms also. Her tail is broken also. I feel that I could post flyers about the pup, but feel that whoever owns her has really been neglecting her. My husband and I have another dog and they get along very well. I have given her a bath and scheduled a vet appointment to have her checked out. We feel we would like to keep her. Has anyone found themselves in a similar situation before? What are your thoughts on our decision to keep her?

Not sure if I can help but here goes. The beagle was either placed there by the owner and is hoping that you will take it in as your own. OR someone has taken it and placed it there. I give you credit for wanting to take the beagle in and as well taking it to the vets. You could post a flyer up and see what happens. If over a period of time (usually a month) and no one claims the beagle then you can keep her. If doing so and she is not registered (city license or tattooed) then get it done so she can not be taken from you. If the person comes to claim the beagle then straight out ask if they are the one that placed it there in the first place & WHY?? and also find some a pet service like SPCA or the sort can check the person's home out to see how it is and/or if they can check on the beagle if the owner claims her. More times than not....no one comes and claims the animal. This has happened to a friend of mine a few times. Good luck and since you want to keep her then I hope she stays with you forever if she is that neglected.

Well, the wrong thing to do is give her back to the owners, if you find them. Take her to the vets get her checked over and tell the vet what happened and tell her your concerns, they might have some advice. If not take her to the dog shelter, I know this may sound awful but at the end of the day its not your dog and she will be cared for by professionals and have another chance to go to a good home, not that I'm saying your home isn't a good one because it obviously is if you've taken her in :). If all fails keep her, the owners obviously don't want her and she was tied up in YOUR yard. Hope I helped, good luck. x

So, someone placed the puppy in your yard, tied up? Sounds like the pup was abandoned. I suppose you could post flyers (with little to no details, to insure any potential owner will have to state something unique about the puppy).

If nothing happens, then feel free to keep her and give her a home.

How young is young?
Is there a possibility she was stolen from "good" owners then dumped on your property?
It is a dilemma.
Would not like to take in and love a poor needy pup, IF the originally rightful owners really loved and cared for her.
Is she tattooed or microchipped?
These are all questions to ask yourself before setting yourself up for heartbreak.

Good luck in your decision,.. you are a kind person.

I would contact animal control and let them know you have a stray beagle pup. There is usually a short waiting period for the real owner to come forward, then you can legally keep the dog. That is what I would do.

I would say that just to make sure you should have him checked for a chip, they can do that at you local humane society and possibly at the vet, if he doesnt have one then I would just keep him, more than likely if you did find the owner you could also turn them in for neglet which is actually a punishable crime. I was jsut saying to check for a chip just so you dont get accused of stealing him. Beagles are sweeties, Im glad he found a caring human to tend to him!!! :)

If you can provide for the dog and enjoy it then by all means keep the dog. Sounds like she was abandoned. Beagles can be wonderful dogs. They can be a bit high maintenance because of their personality but they give back to their owners ten fold in loyality and love. Sounds like you have new addition to your family. Enjoy!

If you have the ability to keep the pup I would. Whoever put the pup in your yard sounds like they abused her. I wouldn't want it on my conscious that I returned a dog to an abuser. Good luck with her.

they may not have been neglecting her. she may have run away awhile ago and has been slowly starving until you found her(or someone found her, knew you had a dog, and left her?).check your local papers(older issues as well as new) to see if anyone has been looking for her. if they spent money for an ad, they care. at our humane society, you can tell them you found a dog, they check for a microchip, you tell them you are keeping the dog at your home, and IF anyone has a matching description, they will contact you. if no one does come forward within 30 days, the dog is LEGALLY yours to keep. good luck!

I would keep her, but if you feel like you can't do that, call a shelter or something to give her to that can give her the proper care.
