I have braces, which makes it very hard to dislodge food with brushing and flossing alone. I heard about the Water-Pik, and I would like to try it. So here are a few questions for you:

How much is it?
Where can I find it?
What is it good for? (advantage/disadvantages)

Thanks guys!

I'm not sure how much it is because the last time I bought one was several years ago. I'd say $30-$50. You can buy one at any department store--wal-mart, target, etc.

It uses water to reach spots where your toothbrush can't. It is excellent for removing food between teeth, up at the top, caught in your braces.

The problem we had with the water pik was my daughter's younger brother. He loved to play with it...you can imagine. So you have to keep it away from little siblings who like to squirt water everywhere on everyone.

Buy one. It could mean the difference between stained, cavity teeth and bright shiny ones.

Price - around $40 - 45
Purchase from any good drug store, walmart, target, etc.
Advantages- excellent for blasting off loose debris from around braces and brackets, stimulates your gums, helps to maintain good oral hygiene, still need to brush!
Disadvantages - the larger models that utilize a big tank are MESSY, however, there is a smaller rechargeable version that is cordless that you can take into the shower and use and refill with nice warm shower water when you need it. Just make sure you have the rubber thingy in the recharging hole! Some people find that initially their gums "sting" from the pressure of the water but gradually as they heal up they toughen up.

If you decide not to use a WaterPik how about trying the GUM Soft Picks - little rubberized toothpicky things that you just push between your teeth at the gum line (under the wire of your braces) Very cheap - $4.49 here in Canada.

love my water pik - even without braces - it's amazing how much gunk comes out of my teeth even after brushing. With braces, this would probably be a great thing to have and use. Start with a low setting on it and then slowly work up the pressure - it doesn't have to be all the way up - the cleaner you keep your teeth the better off you will be - my daughter had lots of cavities when she got her braces off - but she really didn't take good care of her teeth while they were on.
I vote for getting one!

I LOVE my Water-pik.... I use it every single day... I have dental implants (teeth screwed into metal posts that have been SCREWED into your jaw.) and the Water Pik is fantastic for cleaning the teeth AND getting inside the implants to flush out any food particles that fall INSIDE the implanted teeth... They run about $35.. and come with several "TIPS".... it is GREAT for getting food out of TINY PLACES and in between teeth and even (when used on the tongue) helps clean bacteria off the surface to promote better breath...... the ONLY disadvantage I see with the water pik is that it's best to use it BEFORE you get dressed....and it IS cumbersome ---I WISH I had had a water pik when I had MY braces on... it would have been SUCH a Great utensil in keeping my teeth cleaner.... You can find water-piks at Walmart, K-Mart, Target, and any major drug store chain...

I also bought a SECOND water-pik which I use to spray clean my parrot cages... It is a great little pressure washer for getting all that messy POOP off the bottom of the cage....
