Shelters are usually happy to take food even if the bag has been opened. Thanks for thinking of this - it would be shame for it to go to waste.

Yes if its still good shelters will take the dog food as well here in Canada any dog food or treats that my dogs as well maintained dog toys that my dogs don't want anymore. I donate them to PETLAND who in return drop it off to shelters and/or foodbank to help those feed the animals. If you have a foodbank there check with them if they have a family with pets that could use the dog food. You would be suprised that there is families out there that would like the extra help.

I had to return a bag of canidae the other day. I tried to (gradually) switch my dog from the chicken and rice to the one with turkey, chicken, rice, herring and lamb. It was way to rich for her and she wasn't handling it well. The pet store gladly took it back with my receipt. They will get credit for it from the vendor. I just paid the difference for the chicken and rice she was originally on.

The shelter would be happy to accept the food. I always take extra pet supplies to the local shelter when my dog outgrows it (i.e. kennels, leash, colar). They will be very greatful.
