How much money are you willing to spend on training a dog to "guard" you? A poorly trained dog paired with a completely un-knowledgeable person is an accident and a law suit waiting to happen

Why are you putting yourself in a situation that would make you fearful enough to get a dog just to protect you? Walk with buddies - walk in the daytime - walk in public areas - carry a can of mace/tazer/whatever - don't put yourself in a situation that needs your dog to possibly get injured just because you want to walk. If you want a dog, do your homework and get a dog that suits your lifestyle and situation - not some dog you think will protect you -- no, a GSD or Golden will not -- not if they have been poorly trained or just because they are or aren't a specific breed. No do will 'guard you well' if you don't know what you are doing with regards to selecting a dog or training a dog so why set yourself up with some fantasy belief that some breed you select will save your life when the likelyhood of that is almost nil. I have been protected by my dogs on multiple occassions but it wasn't because they were a specific breed or that they were 'protection trained' as that doesn't insure anything either since it is primarily scenario based and not reality. Just use your common sense and stay out of situations that would require you to feel the need for this sort of security. If someone really wants to do you harm, a dog is not going to stop it -- regardless of training or breed or size or any of that stuff.

It depends on if you live in a house or an apartment, because of the size of the dog. My 3 favorite breeds to use for protection and who make great pets and companions are: the Doberman, The German Shepherd Dog and the Rottweiler. All are great protectors and a joy to live with.

Most large dog breeds will protect their family regardless of breeding...you may get a protective breed dog only to find out it does not live up to the hype. In my experience and opinion I think german shepherds and rottweilers are great family dogs and will go above and beyond to protect their master/family. Very gentle when raised in a loving home you do not have to train them to be aggressive or protective either they will be sweet to everyone but if their family or master is being threatened they will react. We had a german shepherd growing up, big loveable guy but if someone started play wrestling with one of us kids he would growl and bark and be ready to jump in if needed, same with our rottie we have now she is only 2 and a sweetheart, very friendly to everyone but I wanted to see what she would do if I was in a "help me" situation so I got my husband to pretend to attack me and I started yelling, she was going to take a bite out of backside till I told her to stop. He also had a rottie before he met me that would guard him while he slept no one could go near his room....so those are my two reccomendations.

You might not think it but my border collie is so protective over me.
She is so friendly towards stangers but if they get to close she stands between us & makes this really funny cry like shes trying to say that shes really not happy.
