In Anchorage, AK, if purchased through a gun shop, probably 10 minutes:
2 minutes of drooling and fondling
2 minutes for the paperwork
2 minutes for the NICS check
1 minute for the credit card payment
3 minutes of drooling and fondling again
If purchased through WalMart, about a week.

In New York state, it takes 6-8 months or more to apply for a permit to clear. That's not counting the week or two you'll spend getting finger printed by the police, getting four recent pictures, finding four people willing to vouch for you, and having a background check from the state Mental Hygiene department. After you get your permit, you can apply to add a pistol to it, which requires you to go to a dealer, buy the pistol, and then send in an application to add it to your permit. After all is said and done, about a year. There's no conclusive evidence to show that this much of a pain in the *** to buy a hunk of nice metal has actually managed to prevent any crime, whatsoever. All the guns the police confiscate and sell seem to get sold right back on the black market.
If you want to actually carry your pistol or take it out of your home to shoot it, you have to do the whole application process over again, as well as have a just cause for carrying it.

In good ole California it takes at least 240 hours. You can pick it up no earlier than 10 full days after the sale is registered with the state. A bummer if you buy it on a Wednesday and the dealer doesn't register it until after the close of business. That means you can't pick it up until after the close of business Saturday--so since they're closed Sunday you have to wait until Monday. Unless, of course they're closed Monday and that makes the pick-up day on Tuesday--almost 2 weeks later.

Here in Nevada, you can walk out the door with your new gun, at least 15 minutes. Do all the paper work, while they do the back ground check.
Sometimes it takes longer for the big shots from Carson City, to do the check. They get overwhelmed with how many background check request they get during the day.
My cousin bought a Smith & Wesson .40. He wasn't able to walk out the door with the gun. Carson City was again overwhelmed with request that day. He was able to pick it up the next day though.
A friend of ours bought a Springfield XD .40. He was able to walk out the door with his gun in 15 minutes.
So, the time it takes for you to take the gun home varies. It all depends on how busy Carson City is on any giving day, here in Nevada.

Here in Florida you have the 3-day wait period for a handgun. It's referred to as a "cooling off" period to help prevent spontanious crimes where a gun would be useful. However I've bought long guns and left the same day. If you purchase ammo with the firearm you get an escort out of the building who hands you your firearm at the door.

In Idaho, if you have a ccw permit, you walk in, do the paperwork, buy the gun and walk out. If you don't have a ccw, it can take from 20 minutes to 3 days for the insta check to get done. Usually though, it is done in about 3 minutes.

in minnesota it takes as long as it takes the salesperson to call for the backgroung check, less than 20 minutes in most cases, depends on the volume of business in the store. and yo can leave with ammo in the same sack.

yeah, 20 minutes, maybe half an hour, depending on whether I am using Cash or Plastic. (Cash takes longer on account of the counting.)
