All dogs - unless debarked or highly trained - will bark if noises disturb them.
Not many dogs will naturally "attack" even if their family is attacked. It's a common misconception - probably brought on by watching movies - that if you are attacked your dog will naturally go over and bite - what your dog will most likely do is bark. The only way to guarantee an attack is to have trained for that - and that takes time and thousands of dollars to achieve.

These sort of characteristics are not in the least bit breed related. Having a dog that 'will attack if their family is attacked' is sort of silly. Having a dog that is protective is one thing but relying on any dog as a sorce of protection in any/all situtaions is foolish. A dog is a dog -- if it establishes a good bond with its family and has a good sense of self it will protect what is theirs, which is their family. All dogs bark - well, except a Basenji and it still makes noise - whether it barks too much will be dependent upon how it is treated and trained. If it is cast into the back yard to be ignored and bored, it will likely become a nuisance barker. If it is part of that famly, well trained and cared for by a family that knows what they are doing before they aquire a dog, then it will likely be a well behaved family member.

My English Mastiff doesn't bark that much. The only time I really him barking is when he wants to play with my other dog. As for attacking? I've never been in that situation, so I don't know what my dogs would do. Any dog, if raised in a loving home is mostly likely to have a natural instinct to protect their family.

Dogs are dogs they are going to bark you might have to take the time and train them too keep it down a little but if not you better believe a dog is going to bark, ecspecially when someone is attacking your family! that's where he NEED to bark thats a good thing! he is letting them know here's a warning to stay away or I will attack you!

Unless you have a trained personal protection dog there is no guarantee that any dog will attack an attacker or protect you. Having a trained guard dog is a hugh responsibility and liability in the wrong hands.
Get a home alarm system.

The Akita. They make excellent guard dogs, although they are not excessive barkers. Look it up, its true that they are very quiet yet very protective.
Plus if you want a dog that doesn't smell then go for this breed because although they have quite a long coat they don't have a prominent doggy odour like most other dogs.

That's a tough one. If you want the dog to be alert and ready to interfere with a potential problem, he's got to be a breed with high energy, which will also tend to bark unless he's trained not to. A laid back breed that won't bark a lot may also be complacent about potential threats.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks rarely bark and are very protective. They are not the dog for everyone so before you get one, make sure you do lots of research! Hope I helped:)
