Only the 60 and 80GB can play PS2 games as they support backward compatibility

Only two versions have the best backwards compatibility (around 95% of games can be played):
1). NTSC 20GB (sold out, not manufactured anymore)
2). NTSC 60GB (soon to be sold out, won't be manufactured anymore)
They have the best backwards compatibility because of Emotion Engine and graphic chips from PS2 installed on those versions.
This info is correct only for US and japanese versions (NTSC). European versions (PAL) don't have those chips at all. They use software to run old games. 80GB version has software emulation all over the world. Software emulation lets you play around 80% of games. 40GB version don't have backwards compatibility with PS2 games at all (all over the world), it can play only PS1 games.

The 20GB and the 60GB can. Those are both discontinued though. You will probably still be able to find a 60GB. The two current version are 40GB and 80GB, neither of which are fully backward compatible.

maybe the 40gig but that seems too unlikly this 1 girl tried 84 games on her ps3 (i dont know the gig #) but all did not work so probably the answer is none due to too much is needed for ps2 games to work but the games dont have those requirments, just in case you dont get short simple to the point, no ps2 games work on ps3 (you should do an expirement find the ps2 game that reqires the most memory and graphics and try it)

When originally released, the PS3 had a full PS2 chip in it that allowed full backwards compatibility. This was on the now discontinued 80GB and 20GB models. Then they released the 60GB model which uses software emulation to play PS2 games. It only plays a limited number. The new 40GB model which was just released has no backwards compatibility with the PS2. Way to go Sony!

Umm...the first answerer got it totally backwards...The NEW 80GB model uses software emulation...the 60GB uses the Emotion Engine Chip...

60 gig is 90%+ compatible, 80 gig is 80% compatible.
20 gig (if you can find one) 90%+ compatible. 40 gig Zero for ps2 but will play ps1.

Any version of the PS3 can play most of the PS2 games, but no version of it can play all of the PS2 games.

none. BUT the 80 gb can play 95% so unless you want to play obscure japanese titles your good.
