My cousin is getting married today and I didn't want to come to the wedding. I had my brother tell the other relatives and my cousin that I had to work, so they wouldn't it hurt their feelings. I really don't believe in marriages and I don't like going to weddings.

I didn't say marriages don't exist, I am saying I am not for them. I prefer the live in partner type relationship and I am the type of person, if I don't agree with something, I am not going to take part in it.

It's your choice I guess, but a wedding is not complete without family, relatives, and friends.

Even not being a 'marriage believer', have you sent a gift or a card? It's a way to show your thoughts of best wishes for your cousin new life and future.

Or give a call? Wedding day everyone is busy, so you don't need to talk to much. 10 seconds to say "be happy ,,,". Leave a message on the cell if needed. Easy way to handle it.

Note: 'Have to work' is a common excuse. And, if your cousin knows you well, "you don't like weddings" would be also considered.

nothing wrong with NOT doing something you think is hypocritical, but that doesn't mean your cousin/relatives can't still be upset with you for not coming. Maybe if you told them the truth about why you are not going they would respect you more. I am sure you still hurt their feelings by not thinking the wedding was important enough to get out of work for like many people would and probably did.

I don't think you were in the wrong. It's very hard to be supportive and happy for someone when what they are doing goes against your beliefs. I don't attend weddings, either, because I think the ceremony is a waste of time and money. Since this is family, I don't blame you for saying that you had to work... helps keep the peace.

It is nothing wrong that you dont believe in marriages, It is your freedom of choice . Attending other person 's Marriage ceremoney is one of the ways to show goodwill to your cousin and strengthen the relationship between you and your uncle, It is good that If you can separated it from your thought of not believeing in marriage .But you really unable to attend his wedding, It is best to tell your uncle directly but remember to bless him and give him a wedding gift instead. so , the future relationship between both of you not been affected .

Did you RSVP that would would be coming? If you did, then you have done a very bad thing. lying about your reasons for not coming isn't too honorable either.

As far as your beliefs in marriage, that's your choice, however, it doesn't mean you can't respect other people's beliefs and wish them well in their endeavors. That doesn't make you a hypocrite, it makes you gracious and respectful.

Despite your beliefs, marriages do exist. Don't attend if you don't wish to, but don't make up lies for an excuse.

You sound fairly convicted in your beliefs, so i am not entirely sure why you asked our opinions in the first place.

Hm... I don't think it's right to bail on your cousin's wedding. You don't have to like it, but it's polite.

Yes, you did the right thing. If you don't feel like attending, don't.
