You need to go to your training NCO to request this school if you are already in the Army. If you are not in the Army at a duty station, then you will not be able to get the school until you get to your first duty station.

Realism is crucial to survival school training and the school instructors strive to create a realistic prisoner of war environment.

However, the Army places strict limits the physical and mental pressures that guards can exert. But the Army will not publicly disclose what the limits are so it can maximize the anxiety for future students.

The mock prison camp is designed to provide the most realistic conditions possible. "Is the guy going to be under stress in captivity? You're dang straight, he is," says survival school instructor Elmer Adams, a former Green Beret who fought in Vietnam. "So, we're going to put him under stress here to prepare him for that, just in case he gets scarfed up."

I went thru SERE for Flight school to become an aeromedical evacuation tech. But there are different types. I was in Class C, for medics. Depending on which one you go through, some are much more intense than others. I will say that you will need to be in good shape, because you will be constantly on the go during the day. And if it's in TX and in August like mine was......even harder. Stuff to bring with you: (and the SERE guys should let you know this ahead of time, but just a heads up:)
Waterproof note pad for writing down coordinates
Canteens (2)
Web belt
Sunscreen
gatorade powder mix
chapstick
and basically anything else you can think of for "being lsot in the woods."

Have you already been scheduled to go to SERE or are you trying to get recommendations to be a pilot/PJ/AE/boom operator, etc? Because if that's the case, you would go through flight school first, and the instructors there will tell you more about it. Good luck!!! It's tough but lots of fun, if you have a good group. :)

PS- I just saw that you are awaiting basic training. If that's the case, you will probably go through SERE (if your job requires it) when you go through your job training. You will need to be medically ready as well, before they sign you off on it. And as far as the Army goes, I'm guessing they will be harder on you than the AF. Be prepared to get yelled at A LOT!!!! Again, good luck.

Army Sere School Requirements

Listen to nothing anyone tells you about SERE. Those who enter into that program are required to keep quiet about it. As far as qualifications, it depends on your MOS (Which is Marine for your job, I have no idea what the Army calls it). Obviously anything flight related will require it, as you have a higher probability of being shot down behind enemy lines. As far as I know, it isn't an initial requirement for Special Forces (Force Recon, Scout Snipers) though being in those billets does put you in a position to request for it. There were some people requesting it as a re-enlistment package. I never confirmed it, but I don't think it is something that can be allocated in that fashion. That being said, I honestly don't think it is something you can just ask for, you have to be in a position to warrant the training. Hope that makes sense.

FYI. You should make it a point not to say 'ex' military. It has a negative connotation to it. Use 'former' instead. Good luck with you new career, and give 'em hell!!!

Well said Kiker. I went through it in 1997.

This is what I'll say: Pay close attention to your surroundings. Observation skills are key. Practice Memory games with yourself.

Be sure of yourself and your confidence. Your dedication to yourself and your cause has to be unquestionable.

I salute you if you join.

Go to your training NCO and request for it. Not every Division has one and if your reserve you may need to go to McCoy or the nearest Active Division. Good luck and enjoy the torture, hehe

Go though basic first before thinking of any other course..

When you are done with that, then go to SERE, airborne, etc.
