And the walls are yellow.
But they aren't supposed to be. We aren't going to re-wallpaper the walls.
But we were wondering if using bleach would help whiten the walls.
I've heard that using peroxide can work, but I wanted to ask first.

A typical household cleaner might do the trick.

Test any cleaner on a small patch in an unnoticable area (I.E. behind the toilet) If it works then try it over a large area.

You are not scrubbing wall paper, are you? You say you are not going to "re-wallpaper" the walls. I am going to assume the walls are painted.

I would wash them down with any cleaner. Then I would paint the walls. You are not going to get them really clean if they are yellowed by age. Painting will be easier than trying to get them clean. I would paint the walls and then give the rest of the bathroom a good cleaning.

Perhaps pick up a couple new rugs for her too. That would spruce it up nice for her homecoming.

SpicNSpan liquid or Pine Sol might do the trick even better than bleach. If you use bleach, make sure you are wearing clothing that you don't mind getting spotted, and make sure you take out towels, rugs and anything else that bleach might ruin (also wear gloves--bleach is harsh on your skin).

I noticed you said, you're not going to re-wallpaper. Are the walls already wallpapered? If so, it might be impossible to get the stain off.

You can use just about any household cleaner, but remember don't mix them and make certain that the room is well ventilated when you do clean it. Turn on the fan and maybe even add another fan so that you are not inhaling the fumes in such a small room.

Go to the supermarket and buy a product called Spick & Span. Follow directions on the package and make a solution. Wash down with Spick & Span mixture and then wipe with clean wet cloth wrung out. If the walls are still yellow, then make a solution with liquid washing detergent and 1 cup of bleach to one gallon of hot water. Wash down again with mixture, then dry with clean wet cloth wrung out. I assure you it will be very clean. Make sure you clean the tub, the toilet bowl, shower stall, around sink and wash floor.

try using Mr clean or something like that first...thatmight be all you need.

The walls are yellow from either having smoke on them...or, just from being older..a good wash will do the trick!
