I went to the after hours clinic today and the doctor told me that I have an umbilical hernia. I have a really bad pain in my belly button and its getting worse. I told him that I have an appt with my primary physician on Monday and he said if I want to wait I can, but he would advise me to go to the ER today because progressively worse pain could mean a strangulated hernia.

Would it be ok to wait until Monday? Have you ever had experience with this? I just don't know if he *has* to advise people to go to the ER. At first he just referred me to a surgeon but when I told him that today it hurts worse than yesterday he said I should probably go to the ER.

Thanks.

I answered your question about this the other day. If your pain is getting worse any doctor will advise you to go to the ER. This is the only thing that they can say to help you as well as protect themselves from a malpractice suit. It may be best to go ahead and see an emergency room doctor. If your pain is worse and you have doubts, I suggest you go to the ER. I hope this helps. I also hope you find relief, soon. I could tell by the symptoms you described before that this was most likely a para-umbilical hernia. I am glad that you saw a doctor and it was confirmed. Good luck with your treatment(s)

A strangulated hernia is very serious. It can result in what is known as "dead bowel" where the bowel that is trapped in the hernia actually dies due to lack of blood flow. This can result in a need for emergency surgery and even peritonitis, a serious abdominal condition.

If the pain is getting worse, it might be strangulated. Just bite the bullet and wait it out in the ER, bring a good novel to read. IF it is NOT strangulated, you are simply inconvenienced. If it IS strangulated, you are not delaying treatment to the point of danger.

If it hurts worse than when you initially saw him, more than likely the pain is going to be unbearable by Monday. Go to the ER. Why go through 2 more days of pain, if it is something that could possibly be remedied with a visit to the ER?

I know nothing about your condition but I do feel that if the pain is worse then yesterday that maybe you should go on to the ER. Better to get there and have it looked at then to be in pain for two more days.

I'm an RN this could be a very bad situation you really should go to the ER today or you may end up with a much worse situation.

Your primary physician probably has a message service or an on-call doctor available. You could call him and see. It would also give you a second source about whether you need to get to the ER ASAP.

You should definately go to the ER because there is no sense in being in pain until Monday if it can be taken care of now.

If you have a strangulated hernia the pain will be so great you will be forced to go to the hospital it happened to me and they gave me a muscle relaxer and I was able to reduce the hernia and not have emergency surgery. I did have surgery at a later date.

I'm sure it will do nothing but get worse, but you could very possibly wait until Monday. The doctor could be held liable if something really bad happened to you between now and Monday.

LOL @ "go with your gut feeling". That's obviously pain.

What is the pain? You say your belly button hurts. Your belly button is not a thing, it can't "hurt". If there is pain at the site of the hernia, then yes, go. But if it's not an emergency, you are taking time away from people who's lives are hanging by a thread. Are you going to die? Go. If you don't feel like you're going to die, but you go, then you might take time from the doctors and somebody else WILL die. Think about it.
