When I talk to God he doesn't talk back but when I talk to myself I at least have the courtesy to respond to myself there's the difference.

Talking to God is very different than when I'm just thinking inside my head. When I'm really trying to figure something out I ask him questions and he often reveals his answers though a variety of messages throughout the week. Often times it will happen that our pastor will say something in his sermon that answers a question I had for God that week, then a friend will same something to me along the same lines without me even asking, and then I'll hear it somewhere else, such as a bible passage. When it all comes together like that in such a short time and from good resources like that, I can definitely tell God is getting his message through to me. I also thank God a lot and also just include him in things I'm thinking about throughout the day. One way you can be sure to include all the various aspects of prayer is to use the anagram FACTS. When you pray, start with Faith. A is for Adoration, tell God how wonderful you think he is, praise him, you can even sing a praise song to him. C is for Confession, tell him where you messed up and that you promise to change your behavior, T is for Thanksgiving, thank him for the wonderful things , people, etc. in your life, but you can also thank him in the difficult times too that it is helping you grow in faith and grow closer to him. S is for Supplication a fancy word for asking. Ask God what you would really like help with, for example, not just to give you an A on a test, but help you to clear your mind and do your best (remembering you have to do your part too). and always, not your will but HIS will be done. We only see a small part of the picture, but God sees the whole picture and knows what is best for us in the long run. Hope that helps.

whats the difference between listening to music alone or listening to music with others?

Some say it allows you to feel a part of something greater then just you.

Short answer is mindset. One state of mind just you spouting off or ranting not caring who listens the other is forming a more thoughtful expression of ideas.
Praying can be more ritualized then just a rant about some guy cutting you off in traffic.
Somethings aren't all about the empirical calculations.

Talking to yourself is the way you sometime try to figure out things for yourself. Saying it out loud can help make sense of a situation, or just to cut loose and be silly for a moment when no one else is around.

Talking to God is the last act of desperation.
(I am always desperate--you have no idea how tenuous our lives are)
Hang on a tic, and I'll ask God what He thinks.

edit: He said: "I am always listening, my child."
(imagine kind of Sean Connery's voice, except more powerful and quieter. XD I'm kidding about the voice.)

If you can not tell then you have a big problem.
In you are talking to yourself and know that you are doing it then you are a normal human. We think in language, and it is a feature of our thought that we talk it to ourselves. It is a feature of the two sided brain.
If you are not aware that it is you talking and you hear your thoughts as the voices of "Other" than yourself it is a symptom of some sort of problem in the functioning of your brain.
It could be physical damage from trauma or disease or it could be biochemical.
In either case it is a symptom to have evaluated professionally.

There is little difference whatsoever, other than one is real and the other is imaginary (unless one tries to deny his or her own existence, which is, of course, impossible).

Even worse, there are some deranged people that have difficulty distinguishing between oneself and their god. In a sense, they are so deranged as to see themselves as a "god." Hah!

When talking to oneself its just asking for your own opinion. When talking to God its asking for an answer. hope this helps!

you may desire to study Julian Jaynes, "The beginning Of understanding in the Breakdown Of The Bicameral suggestions" the assumption is that understanding emerged while people first found out that voice of their heads became into their very own. This became into approx 3,000 years in the past.

when you have a connection to your higher self and have real love, joy and peace within yourself then you already are talking to God. But to answer your question fuller if you are talking to yourself its just your thinking mind that answers you back with its logic through experience, God answers you back through stillness, quieting your mind, and by inspiration.

You cannot tell if GOD is answering you because your heart does not seek HIM. A sincere seeker does not expect an audible voice to say something to them.

GOD bless
