Yeah, I've thought that before too! Lambrusco wine has a similar smell for some reason!

First, are you talking about the grated "parmesan" cheese that comes in a can, or about the parmesan grated from a real hunk of parmesan??
The stuff in the can is wa-a-ay inferior to fresh parmesan, and definitely smells like vomit to me too (...the freshly grated parmesan that comes in a plastic tub or that you grate yourself, doesn't have that smell to me--or maybe just a tiny little bit if I sniff up really close).
Btw, if you're using the canned parmesan because you want it to last a long time, a hunk of real parmesan cheese (Reggiano is the best) will last pretty much forever if you keep it in the freezer in a ziptop bag... just take it out and grate it with a microplane or regular grater when you want to use it --no need to defrost first). Yum!! (btw, Reggiano looks pretty expensive by the hunk, but it lasts a long long time--not sure why)
I have a problem with some cheeses myself... can't take any of them that have that puke smell or the stinky feet smell; I actually wish I could eat them because I really like cheeses in general.
Strangely, cheese that's been darkened under a broiler, etc., has that vomit smell to me also and I can't eat it or even be around it (macaroni & cheese, for example)... though if a food containing cheese is cooked covered, or the cheese is only inside the food and not on the top, it won't have that smell for me.
(I think some of this stuff is just genetic.)

My 10 year old will not eat it because of the smell... but, a lot of cheeses are dipped, brushed or washed in solutions like alcohol or a brine solution. As these cheeses mature, they will take on a more pungent aroma. Sometimes the stinky smell is misleading; a very stinky cheese like Epoisses... is a strong stinky smelling cheese but has a very mild center, but actually taste pretty yummy .

but you know whats a great prank to unscrew the talk-part in a public phone or a friends' phone and get some of that cheese into it and then skrew the lid back on lmao!! so theyll have to smell it everytime they talk xD

They smell alike because parmesan cheese and vomit both contain Butyric acid.

More like sweaty socks, I'd say!
Smell is due to volatile fatty acids such as acetic, butyric and particularly valeric. It was the last of these which got me thrown out of a bar a few years back!

I don't know but it sure tastes great!! But I think it smells like feet. ewww Also did you ever smell the bag when you first open cheese puffs? Now that smells like puke!

i prefer grated chedder (extra mature) taste and smells better! x x but yes as a cheese lover i to do think it smells like puke lol x x

I hate parmesan - mainly because of the smell. I'm glad this issue has been raised so now I can show my husband it's not just me who can't stand it.
