I remember about 20 years ago when I first heard that . I had used 'xmas' but stopped then and there cause I didn't want to be associated with removing Christ from Christmas . But then I stumbled upon the following information . Quite interesting and here's just a bit >>"In ancient Christian art χ and χρ are abbreviations for Christ's name.[3] In many manuscripts of the New Testament and icons, X is an abbreviation for Christos, as is XC (the first and last letters in Greek, using the lunate sigma); compare IC for Jesus in Greek. The Oxford English Dictionary documents the use of this abbreviation back to 1551, 50 years before the first English colonists arrived in North America and 60 years before the King James Version of the Bible was completed. At the same time, Xian and Xianity were in frequent use as abbreviations of "Christian" and "Christianity"; and nowadays still are sometimes so used, but much less than "Xmas". Peace !
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
Next year all our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the yuletide gay
Next year all our troubles will be miles away
Once again as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who were dear to us
Will be near to us once more
Someday soon we all will be together
If the fates allow
Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now

Though it is a little early for christmas, Im happy you are in a good mood, everybody should have a good spirt. I have heard that before that X stood for that but then I heard the next answer that you wrote, so I guess its not taking God out of anything. But I don't use it anymore why be lazy when celebrating.

I don't think it's an attempt to take Christ out of the Christmas holiday. In my family we only used it when we wrote on boxes of Christmas decorations before storing them in the attic until next year. It was more convenient to write it, since it was less letters. BTW Merry Christmas to you also in advance!

Christmas isn't all about Jesus and Christians. It was originally a Pagan holiday. The "X" in Christmas is not wiping Jesus out, however, it's just reminding the world that there's more to it than Jesus.

I wonder what else you were told 20 years ago might not have been entirely true... this "christmas" thing was once banned by christians.
"For preventing disorders, arising in several places within this jurisdiction by reason of some still observing such festivals as were superstitiously kept in other communities, to the great dishonor of God and offense of others: it is therefore ordered by this court and the authority thereof that whosoever shall be found observing any such day as Christmas or the like, either by forbearing of labor, feasting, or any other way, upon any such account as aforesaid, every such person so offending shall pay for every such offence five shilling as a fine to the county."

Never say it. No one knows what date Jesus was born on. The christians just took that date because many pagan religions celebrate on that day. I prefer "Happy Holidays." This shows respect for all of them. If christians were not so self obsessed they would respect others and use it also.
