Many people in the US run into that problem.
Most of the time the clerk, and/or management, does not recognize the card and automatically assumes they don't accept it.

Next time they refuse the card, tell them to swipe it first before requesting that you to pull out another card.

(I'm patiently? waiting for JCB to branch out to my state lol)

JCB Cards can be accepted anywhere Discover Network cards are accepted in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and Northern Mariana Islands starting October 12, 2007. To my knowledge, this agreement does not apply to Canada.

China UnionPay Cards may be accepted where Discover Network Cards are accepted in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean starting November 1, 2007.
