When I went to school one day I must have dropped my phone on the ground. It was raining that morning. The next day I went looking for the phone at the school's lost and found and it was actually there. It wouldn't turn on, so I waited until I got home to take care it. My brother told me that it should only need to dry out and it's fine. We've let it dry out for a while now, and it still doesn't work. When I turn it on the screen shows for 1 minute or so and then turns off. It's plugged into the charger right now, but my brother says not to do that because if theres still water in the phone, the water can fry the electronics and leave it broken forever. How can I fix my phone!?

My brother fell into a river with his... It takes a while for the phone to dry. Your brother is right...Disconnect the battery right away. After 3 days, if it still doesn't work, you can carefully open the phone and try to clean out the insides and let it dry in pieces. You have to be careful! If it still doesn't work get a new phone or take yours in if you have insurance on it!

Here's where I found the info the first time:

Remove the battery. Electricity and water are a bad combination. Your phone has a better chance of being saved the faster you can get the battery out. Step3 Remove your SIM card. This holds a lot of important information. If you do have to replace the phone, it's best if you still have your data. Step4 Dry the phone as much as possible using paper towels. Step5 Allow the phone to fully dry. This can take up to 3 days. Some people like to help it along by placing the phone in a bowl of uncooked rice or putting the phone in the oven (You don't have to turn the oven on, it will still help to dry it). Others try keeping it in the car or on the TV, anyplace that's warm. Step6 Put the battery back in and test it. Check to see if the display screen looks foggy. If it does, it's not dry yet. Test later. Step7 Hopefully your cell phone works and you're all set!

It may be too late since you plugged it in to the charger, but I agree with Annie B.

What you should have done (& still can try) is the following:

Take the battery out and dry it off. Turn the oven on at 175 deg F for 10 or 15 min. & then turn it off. Wait until the oven feels warm inside but not hot. Put the phone (without battery or battery cover) inside the oven on top of a few layers of newpaper for a couple hours. Make sure no one uses the oven!!

Then take the phone out of the oven, wait a few hours, put the battery & cover back & charge it overnight.

The best thing to doe in this situation is to allow the phone to completely dry out... do nothing in the meantime. Resist the urge to fiddle with it your brother is right.

2 or 3 days is usually best, but if you can put it by a warm air vent (not hot!) you might be ok after an overnight.

Keep it off the charger and the battery out.

Only when dry should you hook it all back up. If it doesn't work after that, I hope you have handset insurance.

I do work in tech support for one of the big 3, any of the reps you talk to will tell you you might be out of luck , but you'd be suprised how many phones come back to life. I actually took one into a hot tub once and after it dried, it worked fine.

Good luck.

the key to this is TIME. The water alone does not cause the problem. When u mix it with a voltage, or conductive debris that is when the problem occurs.

to completely dry out takes days not hours.
we repair all kind of circuits and put them in a dishwasher before repairing, then into a heat chamber at about 140°F for 24 hours. if it is not taken apart it will need more time.
any higher temp will melt plastics. check your oven at its lowest setting and place it on its side on the middle shelf.

the charging may or may not have messed it up for good.
the advantage is that it is low voltage and will take a lot to damage it.

If there is conductive crap inside (dirt, whatever carried in by the water) is may need to be disassembled and cleaned.

My phone once went through the washing machine.
To dry it out, I put it in the oven on 95 degrees for twenty minutes.
Still working fine today.

I would try putting it in a bowl of dry rice. Keep it in there for a couple of hours. The rice should soak up some of the water.

Leave it on a towel on a radiator for a week and when it's Dried try turning it on. I dropped mine in a toilet and a week later it still works.
