Sallie Mae has a financial aid planning calendar that starts in junior year of high school. This calendar will guide you through the steps you need to finance college, including how to apply for scholarships, when to fill out the FAFSA, etc.

For scholarships try:

All are free scholarship searches and none will sell your contact information to marketers. Good luck!

It's probably best to do this your senior year, but start applying to colleges now and then go to www.FAFSA.ed.gov
Fill out the form and have it sent to schools that you've been accepted to and are applying for. The schools will send you a financial aid offer with government grants, loans and work-study for the semester you've been accepted. You only have to repay the loans and you don't have to take them if you don't want to. You can accept just the grants, and work or apply for private scholarships.

ALWAYS say that you plan to live on campus, even if you don't. They will award you more money.

I went to a state school, had my entire tuition paid for in grants. I only had to pay for books. I joined the honors club, got a tuition waiver from the school, and ended up getting $1000 back every semester.
I transferred to a private school that costs about $30,000 a year to attend. The school awarded me a scholarship, and the government paid for everything except about $4,000 that I had to take out as a government loan.

You don't even begin repaying these loans until 6 months after you graduate but you do have the option to repay it early.

Talk to a financial aid officer at the college you want to attend and work summers. You should be OK. As a minority, there are probably plenty of grants that automatically will be applied to your financial aid package after filling out the FAFSA. State universities tend to be better in awarding you full cost than private or community colleges, but private universities won't necessarily be impossible to afford either.

Hey! I know a great site for this type of thing. It's called www.fastweb.com . The counselers at my school gave it to me. (I'm also a junior ^_^) Also, you should sign up at www.collegeboard.com theres so much help in planning and such! But the fastweb one shows SO MANY scholarships! The only thing is they are kinda spammy. =/ BUT they are really helpful! And yes! Talk to your guidance counselor cause they helped me out alot. Oh and more thing. IF you have AVID, that would be a great start! But I'm not sure where you are though. THey might not be all over the U.S. (Or wherever you live) I hope I helped!

You will greatly enhance your chances of getting a scholarship if you take the most rigorous classes your school offers, AP or college prep.
Colleges want to help disadvantaged kids go to college, but they will bend over backwards to help a disadvantaged kid with great grades in hard classes and great test scores.

Your guidance counselor is your best resource. He/she can help you research colleges and find and apply for scholarships.
