Christ according to the faith, is the second person in the Trinity, the Father being the first and the holy Ghost the third. Each of these three persons is God. Christ is his own father and his own son. The Holy Ghost is neither father nor son, but both. The son was begotten by the father, but existed before he was begotten--just the same before as after. Christ is just as old as his father, and the father is just as young as his son. The Holy Ghost proceeded form the Father and Son, but was an equal to the Father and Son before he proceeded, that is to say before he existed, but he is of the same age as the other two. Nothing ever was, nothing ever can be more perfectly idiotic and absurd than the dogma of the Trinity.

If you're not a Christian, then don't even bother asking the question -- because no answer will suffice except one which agrees with your own preconceived notions. Why? Because spiritual things are foolishness to the carnal mind:

"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Corinthians 2:14

On the other hand, if you are a Christian, then exercise your faith (for without faith it is impossible for you to please God [Hebrews 11:6]) by believing what the Bible says:

"For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth: the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one." 1 John 5:7-8

Not only does the above verse explicitly state it, but we also have a demonstrated example of it in the Bible:

"And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, 'This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'" Matthew 3:16-17

If you were right, I would agree with you. But, you look at this as compared to human standards. Why could not God, the all powerful One, not be in three persons? The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. That is, the Creative side of God, the Agent side of God and the Power side of God.

Jesus as the begotten Son means the only original son of God. And, we attribute the term 'son' as what we understand a son to be - This is not the case here.

There is much to this as an explanation.

I think the idea of transubstantiation would give the trinity a run for "most absurd" idea. For those who don't know, transubstantiation is the idea that wine becomes the blood, and bread bcomes the actual body of Jesus as a sacred rite is performed. And it gets better: evidently this little miracle actually occurs each and every time a priest says the Catholic mass.

Along with Paul the Apostle's ravings about hating knowledge and fearing how his body might tempt him, the absurdities of transubstantiation and the trinity were too much to stomach.

I'm so relieved that I don't have to carry that junk around in my noggin any more. Atheist and happy.

You were all right

UNTIL,

you began with 'Christ is his own father and his own son.'. I know that you misunderstand what is possible to understand about TRINITY. God infinite and God all by Himself and the same can be said of Jesus and the Holy Spirit;

BUT,

all three are

EQUALLY,

GOD.

Our finite minds can not comprehend this so because you refuse to accept this truth you say it is all Jesus.

To be brutally fair to the theists, I suppose you could say that the properties of supernatural entities can be as weird as anyone might propose.

This particular fantasy is, however, so plainly an attempt to shoehorn multiple deities into notional monotheism that it looks a bit tacky.

As do the attempts by theologians throughout the years to 'explain' the Trinity in simple terms - by employing truly bizarre linguistic fruit-salad with a smug air as if anyone still left baffled has only themselves to blame.

So, why worry about it. Let believers do as they want. The important thing is to do the best for our spiritual life and learninng of our faith, whichever it is

This is not a theory.

What is absurd is trying to understand it in a human logical way.

Just because you cannot rationalize and understand something does not make it untrue

I believe in the trinity. We don't have to understand it, and I don't think we can. You don't have to understand how oxygen gets into your body to breathe.
