Im 21 years old and have been going to school for almost 4 years now. I havent done much with my life thus far thinking that id fall into my little niche eventually. I started college at 18 with a technical college then onto a private college for a semester and went to a community college for more of a variety of classes. I still havent decided what to do with my life and feel like im just wasting it. People tell me im intelligent but lazy and unmotivated. I figure if i got a guy yellin at me all day i might be able to get somewhere in life. Advice? yeas or nays?

Discipline isn't something that others can force on you - you have to want to be disciplined. (Sometimes it's a matter of just getting out of the chair and putting one foot in front of the other.)

I found that working for a large accounting/consulting firm taught me as much about self-discipline as being harangued in a boot camp. Just because what you're doing now doesn't feel right it doesn't mean that a military career is the right choice. Talk with people who have been in the military before joining (isn't this the same sort of research you'd do for any other career choice?).

After many years of doing what I thought I loved I figured out I did love it, but not the environment (corporate he**). So, I took what I was good at and went into another field. When they say "Do what you love, the rest will follow" they really have something there. First and foremost, find out what you love, and what things you're good at. You may be surprised to find that those things will help you find the right path - and will probably include a sense of accomplishment and helping others. (You can also volunteer your time to help others, which many people discover fills the "gap" they feel in their lives.)

And remember too, college isn't for everyone - there are many skilled craftspeople out there who have no college (or a different version, such as apprenticeship) who are very happy and lead fulfilling lives. I mean hey, someone has to shoe the horses, fix the car for older folks, make sure roofs don't leak, and provide answers for many other things!

Join the Air Force. You will learn some discipline and you can learn a useful trade for when you get out. My boyfriend joined at 18. It straightened him up and set him up with a great career! He says it was the best thing for him!

And just because it's the military doesn't mean you can't still have a little fun - there is still some partying, and there is lots of world wide travel!

You sound exactly like me several years ago. I joined the Air Force, served 4 years and then got out and went to college. Best decision I ever made.

If a guy yellin at you all day is your goal you need not join the air force.

And you wouldn't be able to hack the branch where that occurs.
