Well, a young person enlisting in the AF as an E-1 or 2 or 3 would not be able to afford a 180k house most likely unless he has money saved elsewhere. The payment would be like 1500 a month if not more and I can't imagine being able to afford that much less get the loan on his pay and with little credit history. Of course, in the military if you live off post you get a housing allowance up to a certain level so I suppose if a person were just dead serious about doing it it might be possible, but there are other expenses that come along with owning a house, and he would still need a car and have other bills as well.

I am in the Air Force and been in for 8 years and I can't afford a $180,000 dollar house. Let him find out the hard way he isn't going to be rich. After he has been in the military for a year ask him if you can visit him in his house. It will be good for some laughs.

The recruter will often exagerate what kids can really expect. If he's coming straght out of highschool he can plan on making less then the poverty level...he's not getting a house that costs 180,000 and he will most likely end up in base housing.

Dan T, think you should take the whole matter as a joke. He's the one who will be up set when he finds out it ant going to happen, especially if he's now in the Air Force. He will have four years to save what money he can - hope he likes living in a trailor park.

If he's single he will have his own dorm room. If he is married he will be eligible for base housing(which is a free house). Once your rank is high enough you can move off base and either rent or buy. I'm a SSgt in the Air Force and my home was $220,000 so it is possible.

he is stupid if he thinks he can get a house like that, i am in the army and our pay grades are the same (the rank in different, but same pay for each rank) i am a E4, i have been in for 3 1/2 years, i still live in the barracks, i dont got that much money, except the money i saved while in Iraq. no way any way possible.

Anyone who manages their money can do well. Not rich and definitely not a $180,000 house. But don't get annoyed with him realization will kick in soon.

If the "kid" is at least a junior grade officer, maybe. If he's a regular 18 years old kid or whatever and just joining up, he'll be sharing barracks and scrounging for dollars like everybody else.

the real deal is,.....he will not be able to afford an $180,000, home,.....tell him to "dream on",.....he will most likely live on the base with the other people in the Air Force,.....

Well hes in for a big dissapointment. The millitary especially the army promises you a big house and lots of money as a way to get you to enlist.

A couple of years ago I was in college with a friend fresh from Iraq and he said not to join the army cos YOUR NOTHING TO THEM,,NOTHING BUT A NUMBER. THEY WILL SAY ANYTHING TO ENTICE YOU TO JOIN.

I took note of that and sure enough a year later another guy in college said he had to stop his classes. I asked why and he said "Because in about 3 weeks I will be going to Iraq" This kid who was only 18 at the time probably joind because it was a way to get some education but my theory is that the army isnt going to allow you to live long enough to finish your college.
I think you must tell your friend this fact. And the fact that the millitary cant take care of its sick veterans is another warning sign,,,how can they offer him these things when they dont have money to take care of the wounded??? Talk to him about the walter reed incident.

THE DESTINY OF A SOLDIER IS TO TRAIN TO FIGHT AND TO DIE. ANY MAN JOINING THE ARMED FORCES SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT.

A millitary offering a big house, money and education is bullshiting you.
