Yes by all means get a dog but remember a dog is for life and not Christmas. And remember some people can tie alot of money up in a dog.

Animals can make great friends, some even like them more than.........say a sister or brother.

How about "Ruby" for a nice name.

Do not listen to "Gabb". She knows nothing. I am a Veterinarian and I own a Shih Tzu myself! Loving little things! They aren't yappers -- that's a common myth! Right now she's 9 months old and she doesn't bark unless the other dogs are barking or if she thinks someone is going to attack me. Lol. I love her -- like a kid, I tell you!

They CAN be stubborn -- That's just a Shih Tzu thing, but don't worry! They'll come around quickly and potty train if you just work with them! The puppies are cute .. Little fuzzy faces and little puppy booty's just wobbling around! I suggest getting one. They are such loyal companions!

I just got a Shih Tzu puppy. Some things to know is that they are very hyper, energetic little things. Mostly in a good way though. Their personalities differ. My Aunt has 2 Shih Tzu's and they are not very cuddly or nice or socialable. My puppy, who is related to her puppy on the otherhand is very cuddle, friendsly and loveable. Another thing. My aunt cuts her dogs hair so she doesent have to groom it and bath it so often, but we have grown my puppy's hair out... It makes her look very very pretty but requires a little more attention. Any more questions, let me know :)

Check with shelters and rescue groups first. The rescue groups can help you ensure the dog you get has the right training and personality to match your family. If you really must buy a dog, PLEASE be sure to buy it from a reputable breeder (one who can show you the parents of the dog and where it is being raised) rather than a pet shop. Breeders can also help you make sure that a Shih Tzu is the right choice for you and your family. Pet shops sell dogs from back yard breeders and puppy mills - PLEASE don't help keep these reprehensible things in business.

They are wonderful dogs! I have 4 of them. (My picture is of one of my pups!) They have some health issues in the breed, and many BYB's over breed them. So you need to be careful when picking out a puppy.

Here is a link to the American Shih Tzu Club. They are a wonderful resource! Good luck!!!

Do it!! I had one for ten years and he brought a ton of joy and love into my life!! They make great pets!
Take a lot of pictures when they're puppies! Expect to have extra toilet paper on hand - they like to unroll it for fun! Expect to laugh a lot!!

PS. Mine wasn't hard to train. He was "house broken" very quickly. He didn't bark as much as many other small breeds.
I've also house sat for other Shih=Tzus and they didn't bark that much! "Pomeraiums" bark all the time!!
