The LDS Church doesn't pay any of the leaders, no one is compensated for their time and efforts...do any other churches NOT pay their clergy/pastors/teachers?
Just curious...

Paula r - that is a common sterotype that all Mormons have lots of children, actually, we are "urged" to have as many as we can spiritually, physically and mentally take care of, whether that be 2, 5, or 10... no one is looked down on if they don't have a large family.

The reason most Pastors or Priests are paid is the some reason you are paid for the job you do. They do not necessarily get all the money from the collection plate. There is a Vestry, a group who are responsible for deciding Church business matters, and they are many. The priest puts all his work days in the business of caring for the parishioners, composing his weekly message, and teaching. Visiting the ill, comforting those who are in need. A Good priest is essentially on call 24 hours a day everyday of his life. Actually this remains true even tho he may have retired from the active priesthood.

Brother G isn't quite correct when he says that the apostles and general authorities are paid ministers. Usually when someone is said to be a paid minister they would recieve a yearly salary like one who would work in a secular atmosphere. For example Priests and Preachers in many religions recieve enough money to buy houses, cars, vacation houses, timeshares, properties, and other luxury assets which is theirs to keep from the donations of the congregations(plate offerings, etc.) that they minister to.

The Mormon authorities (only the ones who cannot afford to support themselves; or who have given up their secular jobs for a short period) only recieve a limited amount of money for living expenses(which expenses are dictated for them by the church). That means that anything they buy for themselves(luxurys of any kind and any left over money) are not theirs to keep, and are relinquished at the end of their missonary services. Roughly speaking they end up with exactly what they started. So you can't really consider that "paid ministry" as compared to other denominations.

As for the Apostles and the First Presidency, the same conditions apply to them as stated above. The main difference is that most, if not all, were wealthy men(wealthy from secular jobs and not ministering) before they became positions of authority in the church(heart surgons, lawyers, ect). Therefore they are living off of their own savings, and investments. Many of them opt to liquidate all their investments(which is in the millions), donate it to the church, and then live off the moderate living allowance as dictated by the church.

Princess Peabody's comment is so inane it pains me that I actually have to debunk another article written by the deceptive and unintelligent Tanners. First of all, read each scripture that is given by them to show that ministers are supposed to be paid... they are completely taking it out of context to prove their un-thought-out point. Paul wasn't talking about being paid with money in any of them. In fact Paul boasts continuously that he followed Jesus's advice in Mathew 10: 8 "..freely ye have received, freely give." The rest of the article is so rediculous I wont even comment on it.

Actually The First Presidency, Apostles and Members of the quorum of the seventy are paid ministers of the church.
but Bishops, Stake Presidents and I think Regional presidents and their counselors aren't paid for their work.

my pastor does not get paid by the church. he was a successful stock trader on wallstreet. He was able to recently retire from wall street and be a pastor full time while still not taking money from the church. God has blessed him so much in his work that there is no need to.

When I was growing up, the church I went to did not pay its preacher. It was a Church of Christ and this particular congregation had a number of peculiar beliefs such as no Bible classes, no kitchen, etc.

Pastors/Ministers in Spiritualism are volunteer. There are things like marriages and funerals that are a personal income.

I think the Jehovah's Witnesses have to work. They are voluntary, I am almost certain. I feel sorry for LDS though. They "urged" to have huge families. Plus, they have lots of "church duties" so I don't know how they make it. God Bless Them!!!!!
