My husband wants a trail camera for Christmas so I figure I better start looking - but I want it to be a surprise - so I am trying to find out what some good ones are that aren't too expensive - like maybe a few hundred dollars?

I agree with Caleb: Cuddeback = The fastest shutter time available = no botched pics showing the wrong end of a deer or nothing at all.

2 other things to consider:

1.) No matter the maker get one with Infared night mode, It takes a b&w pic (at night) but doesn't flash.

2.) Go Digital so you know what you have sooner. Also, some Digitals will record mini-movies, like 10-30 second quick-time videos. Make sure it uses the same media type as your personal camera; SD, etc. so you can check it in the field if the game camers is with out a viewing screen.
There are actually some models that will email you new pictures so you don't risk contaminating the area checking for pics, But I think they also require a service from a cell phone place, and are expensive.

One more piece, spend more on something that works and will be easy to use. It doesn't save money if it sits in a closet, being ineffective or troublesome.
A high end cuddeback is just over $400, Cabelas.com is a good place to start.

Check out Cuddeback. They have an incredibly fast trigger time and some will even take videos. Also look at www.cabelas.com, they have a good selection to choose from.

...the best thing you could get your husbands is the book "101 reasons why hunting is pathetic"....then get him a camera so he can run around woods and shoot animals with a camera instead of a gun?? yeah...most definitely.
