to bite your tongue or say what's on your mind. I feel that anytime you bite your tongue, you're letting someone get away with using you.

This is a good question. I'd say pick your battles carefully. If you find yourself biting your tongue continually with the same person over the same issues, I would address it calmly and factually.

For example you could say: " Mr. X, you have mentioned this sore subject 5 times today and you may not be aware of this but I find it very insulting and I would like you to please stop doing this".

If it's a matter with a person you are likely never to deal with again, I would bite my tongue and save the my time and stress for more important things.

You aren't letting anyone get away with anything, unless you are a parent or teacher. Then, you would need to correct someone to keep them from harm or a reoccurring mistake.

When you bite your tongue, you are saving your voice, your time, stress and your character. If you start screaming or lashing back, (as I too often have) you will get a sore throat, stressed out and leave a negative image toward everyone in earshot....yes, even the other mean party.

So what if they get the last word? In your mind and God's ears, you are even MORE right for controlling your anger and just KNOWING that you are right in your mind, and God's. He knows what you want to say, but you hold back to please Him.

I know, I know...that doesn't let you vent or tell them off. But, do you want to be right and at peace, or just holler and hope that you are right?

I always say what's on my mind but I usually bite my tongue until I calm down and then I unleash holy heck if it's needed.

If it's a matter of someone using you, you need to say something or they'll just keep using you. If you enjoy people who use you, then keep on biting your tongue.

When in doubt, say nothing, because you are giving someone else ammunition to use against you in the future when you speak out. You know that phrase - discretion is the better part of valor - well, it is true, because then you don't make trouble for yourself!

My dad always said; It is better to remain silent and be thought the fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.
HOWEVER- at times we have to speak up, in defense of one who is weak

It's appropriate to say what's on your mind when you know it will not hurt someone you care about.

I agree. You need to speak up when you feel you are being abused or bullied.

Say what's on your mind, tactfully. I always do.
