someone i know has been in the army (national gaurd). he served in kosovo for 2 years now. he told me that all together he has to serve 11 years.

what i have gathered is he is suppose to get 2 years off after he has served 2 years.

my question is does he get the CHOICE to stay in kosovo for 2 years (that he would have gotten to take off) or to get to go home for 2 years. then return?

i hope this wasn't confusing.

thanks in advance

the two years at home simply means that his unit is not scheduled to activate/be deployed for 2 years following their return home. note I say UNIT. as an individual he CAN volunteer to stay longer or be put back into the pool of available bodies to be deployed. It is also possible that as an Individual he won't be given the choice to volunteer, he will be voluntold.

The last I heard the mission in Kosovo was for 9 months at time. I shipped 8 National Guard and US. Army reserve units to that location from the Northwest. I believe the 11 years he is referring to continuous duty, although I am not sure if he means his status on Active (while deployed) or reserve status when he returns. A longer talk with him should clarify any questions.

If he has to serve for 11 years, that is because that is what he committed to in his contract.

He may have chosen Kosovo, or the Army may have chosen it for him.

There is no way for me to answer without reading his contract. But in the end, the Army will put soldiers wherever they are needed, for however long they are needed for.

in the army you really have no choice if your unit is called then you go and the army has been known for extending your tour w/o your knowledge or approval
