There are local jails, state prisons and federal prisons.

Go to your counties Sheriff's Department web site and look up county jail information.

Or

Go the your state's Department Of Corrections web site.

Or

Try the Federal Bureau of Prisons web site.

http://www.bop.gov/locations/index.jsp

Each will give you all kinds of information and help you to understand.

They will also tell you about visitation schedules and such.

But, no, its not public like you can not just stop by and walk in and look around.

Public in what respect? Public like you can go there any time you want and do anything you want? No. Public like most are run by a Govt Agency. Yes.

But don't be fooled, it is not a place you have a "right" to be at or go to ro visit. You give up your right to privacy when you enter most prison grounds. There are signs that remind you that you can and will be searched for contraband and can be arrested if you are caught bringing illegal items to a jail or prison, trying to give things to prisoners, etc.

What is it you are trying to find out?

Pretty good if the person who was assaulted files a police report. Most district attorneys and judges won't let that behavior go without being punished. But if the person does not file a police report and it goes unheard of by law enforcement then no, the person will not go to prison. In fact, most of the time minor assaults like this don't go to prison, they go to a county jail. This is because it wasn't a life-threatening assault but a simple "fight" per say. A simple assault can get up to 1 year in jail with up to 1 years probation afterward. More violent assaults get longer terms making it prison time spent. Prison terms are meant for anything past 1 years span. County jails are for terms up to 1 year. Additional UK Law::: The UK has strict guidelines and laws on assault as well. However, they are more involved with heinous and serious crimes because of the rape/murder rates they have. There's a good chance it'll go overlooked because the UK has more problems to deal with rather than minor assault.
