Birman cats are lovely, friendly cats. They are generally very tolerant and affectionate with children and are fine with dogs (assuming the dog is fine with them!). They are inquisitive animals that like to be with their people at all times. They're also very playful even when they get older.
I don't find they shed anymore than your average cat. Their fur is silky soft and has no undercoat, so they don't mat. Like any cat, they do shed, especially in spring.
If you want more info on birmans, you should research some breeder websites. Lots of them have information on the characteristics of the breed and stories about them.
But if you're looking for dog-like affection and companionship in a beautiful feline, birmans are your cat!

Longer in build than the typical longhaired cat, with a narrower face, the Birman has a pale gold coloured body with contrasting mask, ears, head and tail. It's front paws are tipped with white, whilst its back paws have white gloves at the front and white gauntletsat the rear that finish in a point up the back of the legs.
TEMPERAMENT: A gentle, well behaved cat, the Birman is very sociable, it enjoys the company of humans and is friendly towards other animals.
So generally, because it's considered a long haired cat, it will shed. With proper care and grooming, it shouln't be shedding excessively.

I had one, very loving, calm, easy care. When a strange cat came into the yard she would yowl, and the dogs would charge out the dog door and chase it away, so she didn't have to soil her dainty white paws.
