The owner of where I work has been black listed by all vendors and now has to buy everything from grocery stores. Is that legal?

Liquor laws vary from state to state. I had an Iowa liquor license. I could not buy beer from a store to sell at my restaurant, I had to get that through state approved distributors. However, I could buy all the hard liquor I needed, but only one case of wine per week from a store, be it a grocery or liquor store.

In general, there is laws, depending on what states, on how restaurants can purchase alcohol. Usually restaurants have to purchase alcoholic beverage from licensed distributors. Some restaurants get away with purchasing wines from individual collectors. However, purchasing grocery stores is generally not heard of.

Besides, why woud most restaurant owners want to do that. In general, the distributors can give the restaurant a better pricing. When someone purchases from a grocery store, you are paying a commission to the grocery store AND to a distributor who sells his inventory of wines to the grocery stores. So, the profit margin is much smaller.

As long as he has a liquor license, I don't think it matters where he's buying it from....but he must be charging an exorbitant price in the restaurant if he's already paying retail for it!

This is dependent on the state.
