It all goes together. I point out letters and shapes and sounds to my son as we go through our day. I've done this since he was born. This is a thing you should teach a pre-schooler and they are not really going to sit down and "study" in a traditional sense. You have to be creative and make them think it is just part of the fun. I even bought a CD that has different songs about the alphabet. My 24 mo doesn't really know the meaning of what he is singing, but he knows most of the songs by heart.

Two is a good age, You can sing it along with putting in the shapes in an alphabet puzzle. There are also good books that show all the things that start with that letter. and letters with magnets to put on the fridge. It takes a little while but we had fun doing it.

I would say at the age of two, but before that keep telling them this is the color red or this is a circle when you see things around them. same with the alphabet sing to them to help teach them what the letters are before showing them and teaching them what they look like.

I started when they were very little by putting a BIG letter of the week on the fridge we would say the letter through out the day when we saw it we would also associate it with an object the letter started with. Like B for Ball. It was fun and my kids loved it. Some of my children remembered faster than others but all children learn at there own pace.

I would have to agree, my daughter is
23 mo and can sing the alphabet. The Leap frog letter magnets helped her plus I quiz he every day. I will pick out 3 magnets and ask her what they are. I also do this with Numbers and colors and shapes.

My son has many toys that sing the alphabet and makes the sounds of the letter and he repeats them all the time. He can even recognize at least half of the letters and tell me what they are. He's also doing his colors now too. Every child learns at their own pace, but it's never too early to at least introduce them to learning.

Start singing the alphabet to them when they are very young. If you do this a lot of children can sing it with you by age 2.

My are doing this with our 18 month old. Her doctor said she is very smart for her age (she watched her with a book and she could say most of the pictures in it and point to all of them) and she says that she is gifted. she already knows her shapes and colors so the doc said start with the letters....she is not trying to make a baby genius out of her, but she said to keep moving forward with teaching her since she is doing so well.
We have a magnet board with all the letters and numbers. She knows about 1/3 of them already and we keep working on it. we do not force/push her. She loves her letters and will get the magnet board out by herself to play with. She can also count to 8 on her own already. and she can identify numbers 1-9 and 0.

We started around two and at two 1/2 she knows all the letters, and can point to them when looking at books or even driving past stores. We really like the leapfrog letter magnets and the letter factory video by LeapFrog ($9.00 Target) She also loves to pick out the letters on a keyboard and can spell out her name on the computer.
