I guess your mother-in-law wouldn't appreciate seeing me put the fork in the dog's mouth and then putting it in my own...or seeing my cat's head buried in my dinner plate on the coffee table while we watch CSI and eat dinner either?! Yeah, maybe people without pets think it's disgusting. More than one person has told me just that. I suggest as politely as possible that maybe they shouldn't come over if they feel that way.
She's you mother-in-law and chances are she's going to find fault with you in any way possible. I have a bit of a problem with that if this is YOUR house. My own mother doesn't tell me what to do in my own house.
You do it any way you see fit honey. There are lots of us out here standing right at the sink with you doing precisely the same thing and we're not sick or dying from it either. I'd invite her for dinner and purposely wash the dog's bowl and then HER PLATE with the same wash cloth. That's just how I am.

Mine go in the dishwasher (occasionally) with all the other dishes. The dogs and cat also clean the plates before they go in the dishwasher. PS You say you do your dog bowls last, do you use the same washing up brush/sponge/cloth?

I do that with ours, what's the fuss? The soap and the hot water remove the stuff you're washing. If she has a fit again, just put the used wash cloth into the laundry hamper and put a new one out after you've cleaned the bowls.

Personally, I wouldn't cause my cats eat mice and my dogs "clean" themselves way too much for me not to have psychological reprucussions..(and soap breaks down dirt more than disinfects) - but to each their own (there's stuff I do that a lot of people won't!)....this world is oversanitized anyhow...just don't do it in front of your mother in law that's all. Or use paper and plastic.

Well if you let your dog's bowls sit for a year before you clean them and then do it with the rest of your dishes, that's sorta nasty. But if you do it fairly often (weekly or more) then it's not so bad.
Besides, when has anyone's mother-in-law EVER had anything good to say about their techniques? :P

I personally wouldnt but I'm really picky about how I clean things. I always put these pet dishes in the dishwasher along with any sponge that I used.

You can, I have. Just make sure you are using hot water, and I generally save the animal dishes for last, so no ickies are floating in the wash water. But to tell you the truth, my hubby would prob have a cow it he knew. Shhh!

Some people think its gross. I don't do it in front of people, but yeah, I do it. There is nothing dangerous about it, but its a matter of perception. If you are trying to keep your MIL happy, pretend that you won't do it anymore. If you can't stand her, discuss the issue during dinner ;)

I'm sure you love your dog and take care of him very well but some people don't care and just see it different.
On the other hand mothers-in-laws ain't a mans best fiend.
Take care.
