Plate and frame exchangers are usually used for relatively clean, non-fouling, low viscosity, low pressure fluid applications, and where space is very much limited.
They are not very good for very high temperature applications either because of their sealing requirements.
They can many times be less expensive than shell and tube exchangers for very corrosive fluid and gas applications.
