Were I to go - hard benches.
A friend of mine once put it like this: "You are not supposed to be comfortable in church."
Frankly, I disliked the American churches where I sang: all soft and padded, but absolutely HORRID acoustics. I rather have no fabric/cushions/carpets/curtains, but good acoustics.
And I'm an atheist!
