A better term than fundamentalists is Christian Pharisees. They judge others by scriptures read out of context and by doctrines alien to original Christianity.

It is a challenge to show the charity of the Good Samaritan with modern-day Pharisees who pop off with doctrinaire answers and make little effort to respond to questions with integrity. Even Jesus grew angry with their hardness of heart.

The best response is to point to biblical evidence contrary to their doctrines. Though the doctrine of "sola scriptura" is itself contrary to Christianity and never taught in scripture, scripture is a common ground between original Christians and Christian Pharisees.

For example, I asked this afternoon, Do Protestants reject Bible teaching on "faith alone"? The phrase "faith alone" is only used once in scripture, in James 2:24: "You see that a person is justified by what he does and NOT by faith alone." Who was right, the Bible or Martin Luther?

We need to teach Christian Pharisees gently about the full Gospel of Christianity. In the meantime, a soft answer turns away wrath.

You simply ignore them. You don't need those kind of people in your life. Would you follow a flock of sheep over a cliff just because you were once a sheep?

I try to be tolerant of their belief, I know they are, also, sincere. But I don't get too personal with them, make too close friends, unless they are also tolerant of me. My beliefs are secure and I don't need them to confirm or validate them. I imagine they feel the same.
