Mac OS X Problem?

Question

I am using an iMac OS X and the Hard Disk Icon is missing from the desk top .

What do I do to retrieve it and how do do it?
I've tired several things, including the Help window and still have not been successful

Click on the "Finder" icon on the bottom tray. Once that folder opens, cntrl-click on the "Macintosh HD" icon found on the left column. When the pop-up menu appears, select "Copy 'Macintosh HD'". Then cntrl-click on the desktop. When the pop-up menu appears, select 'Paste Item". That should return your HD icon to your desktop.
