donate money or time...a lot of charities just want money, but i dont think anonymously or telling who you are matters, helping is helping

Probably, the most effective way to give to charity is to find someone in need and give them a helping hand directly whether it's a denotation of food to help feed their family or help fix up their home. If you choose to give money you also know the entire amount is going to them, instead of just a portion of it as with many charity drives, where they call and try to get you to donate. The amount of your dollar that actually goes to where it should be going varies from charity to charity and sometimes from drive to drive, and there have even been scandles where some people associated with some charities have walked off with large amount of the money. It's one reason why I'm very cautious about which ones I support and which ones I do not support.

well what Ive learned from my own experiences is we all know charity starts at home,,,now I'm one of those lucky ones that have those family members with drug and alcohol problems but what do you do? keep sending money? that never really worked,,so what i do now if someone depending on who needs my help and god willing i can help even if it's just going and instead of giving them money,,,taking them to the grocery store or gas station,,writing a check for the rent,,,and Ive heard a very smart man recently say "you cant solve money problems with money" and charity i think is volunteering at your church, or your kids school etc,,,I do believe in one thing some of you will probably give me a thumbs down but i seriously think charity really does need to start at home,,,I see kids up the street at the bus stop for school with no coats on,,,,,that's why i cant wait to win the lottery so i can hand deliver the things myself,,,i just always feel it's a shady deal sending money overseas ya know?

By check directly to the local branch of the charity of interest. If you donate through a national office or through a campaigne company, only a minute fraction of the amount filters down to the local organization.

Help out someone who may be few feet from you. Often times people think that they have to donate to a big organization, this is not case. Sometimes things done on a small scale can mean a lot to a person and you too.

Buy and give food directly to food banks or to the shelters for the homeless. That way there is no administration reduction of the value of your donations. All of the food is an effective donation.

Don't tell anyone when you give. Also, check that the charity has high standards and belongs to the BBB - Better Business Bureau. God Bless!

Give an actual product so you know the charity is putting it to use and not wasting your money.

Give some voluntary time to help is most effective but also giving regular donations to keep them afloat.
