does it accurately portray the work of emergency doctors?

Yes, I believe it does. I stopped watching ER for about two years. Now I have started watching it again. Although the ER is usually not staffed that well in some areas, it is definitely doing a better job of depicting the true problems of visiting an ER. This show is under the supervision of a true physician. It does a better job of depicting incidences than Grey's Anatomy does, although I love that show as well.

So, yes it is more realistic.

its a lot more dramatic that what normally comes into the ER on a daily basis. They also save more patients with unusual tactics than would be normal. Things happen more quickly such as blood being available in seconds, specialty surgeons just waiting for a person to be rushed to the operating room and no one waiting for hours for test results.

It's not nearly that chaotic. They would NEVER do open thoracic surgery in the ER like they do in every episode on the tv show. People can't wonder in off the street and up to the nurses station like they do on the show.
