For example, a bag of marbles. It's just lying there, no owner in site, three marbles in a very nice bag that is obviously from the gift shop downstairs. Do you bring it to lost and found? Or claim it as your own?

I was in this situation yesterday and I promptly returned the lost items to lost and found. On doing so my mum bought me my own bag of marbles. I collect them. :)

You cannot believe how many honest, well meaning folks saved both me and my hubby so much heartache and loss in our young years when we were prone to leaving important things behind like key rings with all our house and car keys on them, sunglasses, the baby's bottle or pacifier that I'd laid down momentarily and wallets with all our money and I.D's and credit cards in them.
I found a guy's wallet once and mailed it to him when were traveling and on the road.
Most memorable was the time hubby's wallet fell from his pocket entering the car on one Christmas Eve outside a very busy market. The gentleman that found it, got scared and took the wallet home but called us anyway. Hubby gave him some extra Christmas money as a reward when he went immediately to retrieve his law enforcement badge and money and I.D's in that wallet!

As for those marbles, I would immediately have turned them into the library's lost and found.
And you did a good thing when you did the same and thought about somebody else's unfortunate cirmcumstance rather than your own personal gain.

Honestly, depending on how "nice" this bag of "marbles" looked, I might leave it alone because it could be something that was never paid for if it came from the gift shop

Well, if it was a briefcase full of 100 dollar bills then I would keep it. After all, the person who owned the briefcase is probably shady anyway.

But if it was a bag of marbles, it might be a kid's toy and I wouldn't want to break their hearts.

So it all depends, really.

What if those marbles were yours and left them behind by accident? Wouldnt you want them back? I would do the right thing. I would take them to the lost and found section.

It's not yours to claim as your own. Hand it in to the librarian in case the owner comes back to look for it. If you left something behind, wouldn't you expect the finder to be honest and hand it in?

I would kindly refile the marbles under the "M" section

I'd leave it there in case the person who lost them knew where to find them.
