when they can get a job or pay for their own phones. I'm not buying my kids phones. they can get the prepaid ones, and pay for it themselves. otherwise, either use your friends phone, or use a pay phone. I'll get them a calling card.

As a parent with 4 children I used to think 14/15 was the best however my kids range from 9 to 17 and all of them have had a cell phone at least a year. My 9 year old daughter and 11 year old son rarely use them but when their buses are late or on the occasion they miss the bus, they can call me and let me know immediately. Also since we moved out of state and I haven't changed their numbers it allows their old friends to call them with no cost to them, their new friends have the house number. For my 13 year old daughter the phone has turned out To be the best punishment tool ever, she hates to be without it and the threat to take it away tends to keep her in line. As for the cost factor there are several services that have predetermined spending limits that will cut off service once it is reached.
Just a little something to think about.

I agree with above, when they start driving and dating and even then I think it should be one that can closely be monitored. I coach middle school boys and girls and they will literally sit on the bus on the way to games and talk to eachother on their phones, one person sits in the front the other in the back and they talk forever or texted. What a waste of money and they arent responsible enough not to lose them, if I had a quarter for every phone I picked up I wouldnt even coach, I would make the same amount of money! Good questions, I am sure you will get a varity of answers that will be interesting! haha

i'd say around 12-13. now they have thoes cell phones that you can limit who your child talks to and also ones with tracking devices so you can see where your child is. like the disney phones. you can give your child a certain amount of minutes at a time and if the want more, they have to earn them

I think 12/13,it's stupid that some people give their 5 year olds mobile phones.what do they need them for?!
I got mine when I was 12,i don't use it that often but it comes in handy,if I want to go out then I can phone my parents and tel them where I am.If I'm gonna be late home from school for whatever reason then I just call my parents.I don't use my phone much for chatting to my mates,I use the home phone or just go on MSN.

First year of high school, as they usually have to travel, so 12 or 13. Not for chatting, just when they need picking up or in an emergency. Only pre-paid though, so they can't run up a too high bill, and you can tell how much time they are sopending on it.

I think a child should get a phone @ 16. When they start to date and go out with friends.

well unless your child is spending lots of time away from you (other than school) there is really no reason for them to have one.
My daughter is 10 and we got one for her when she was 9 because she spent alot of time at friends houses and riding around the community. We needed to remind her of the time she needed to be back home and this worked better than when we bought her watches.
