Sometimes the kids leave the door open and out she goes getting all dirty. I've whipped her and even left the door open to test her several days in a row. But none of this has worked. What do you suggest?

Teach her to sit and stay at an open door. Every time you go out, even with the leash on, sit and stay at the door until you release her.

Added - Yes, both my dogs are trained to sit at the door before we go outside. Even when the door is opened, they don't budge until I tell them "OK".

Make it a habit that if the door opens she sits. As you leave, always make her sit a few feet inside. Before she goes out make her sit there. This will become a second nature, "if a person is at the door I sit." This way she will learn her boundaries. My dogs sit on the carpet around the door and wait to be invited out. We live in an apartment with no yard so they had to learn this very quickly so they did not run into the street. Good luck and remember, Patience and consistency

Leash her loosely and then open the door, if she tries to walk out the door tighten the leash and tell her stay. After doing this several times and she starts to learn it you will also have to teach her when it is ok to go. So open the door and if she stays like taught then give her the command ok or go outside whichever you prefer. This may be confusing at first but with repeative training she will get the hang of it. My sister trained her do with a bell near the door, when the dog wishes to go outside it will tap on the hanging bell for permission to go out. You could try this after she learns to wait for your ok command to go outside.

Whipping your dog isn't going to work as you've found out. You really need to train your children not to leave the door open then work on your dog without hitting her.

All u have to do is just train the dog. Work everyday with the dog and just keep on working with it. Test the dog every single day and it'll soon be trained. Most of all don't whip a dog or it will be willing to run away or be scared of you. And if the dog is scared of you it certainly won't listen. So please don't whip the dog. It is very sensitive.

I wish you the best with it. Good luck. I hope it works.

You don't whip a dog! Sheesh!
Teach her to lie down and stay when the door is open. That's how I trained my dog. It takes some effort on your part but it's worth it. And train the kids to shut the door for the dog's safety.

You whipped her? What the heck is wrong with you? You DON'T whip a dog. That's not teaching her anything. Your poor dog. Why don't you teach your kids to shut the damn door.

You need to teach the kids not to leave the door open (honestly, that's just a good thing to teach kids anyway...especially with winter coming up). Maybe you could try whipping the kids for leaving the door open since you can explain to them WHY you are beating them and they will understand the words that are coming out of your mouth instead of the poor dog who doesn't understand why you are angry with her.

Firstly, stop beating ("whipping" her as you've put it) the dog when she comes back in. That won't teach her not to go out the open door, all it will teach her is to not come back in or to run away from you when you approach her outside. Secondly, you first have to actually teach her not to go through open doors without permission before you can "test" her. And thirdly...she's a dog and she enjoys going outside and getting dirty, it's called a self-rewarding behavior and by doing it she gets rewarded by enjoying herself. Even once you teach her not to go out without permission she will still probably go through the door if no one is there to watch her.

As for teaching her not to go out without a leash, first you have to prevent her from rewarding herself by going out without a leash. THIS MEANS YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THE KIDS KEEP THE DOOR CLOSED WHILE YOU ARE TEACHING HER THIS! The ONLY time she gets to go outside is if she has a leash on. NO exceptions. Every time she accidentally gets out without the leash your training will be set back. Put the leash on her BEFORE you open the door so that she doesn't get a chance to reward herself by bolting through the open door without a leash. Then, make her sit and open the door. Do not allow her to go through the door (or even break her sit) until you have given her a release command (ok, let's go, outside, whatever you find easy and natural to say). Then she gets to go outside. If she gets up from the sit when you open the door (and before you give her the release command) simply close the door (or if the door is completely open but you haven't given her the release you could simply step into the doorway and physically block her path) and give her a quick "ah-ah" or "no" and make her sit again. The basic idea here is that she doesn't get to go through that doorway until YOU say she can. For most dogs, outside is what they want and getting to go through that door is enough of a reward for waiting and sitting patiently, but a tasty food reward or two sweetens the pot and makes this exercise even more worth it for many dogs.

This is the method I have used to train both of my dogs (and any foster dogs I happen to have at the time). They will wait for permission to go through doors to the outside (both coming and going), the car doors (both getting in and out), gates, etc. They do occasionally get over-excited and forget, but it is a rare occasion and when they do they immediately come back in if I call them.

Tell your kid to shut the door. Also try working with the dog everyday.

When she goes just show her an attractive things that she wants so she will come back and when you go outside just leave a good thing for her that she likes I think it will work.
